I'm lucky to still drive a Lexus IS 300 and cringe when I see the elongated version on the road - which thankfully is not too often. Courtesy prevents me from posting a pix... but if you do a Google search on 'Lexus IS 300 Hatchback' you see what I mean. Regardless of whether a car is 2-door or 4-door... taking an good original design and adding sheet metal to create a variant... I dunno. This is right up there with Porsche creating the boat known as the HMS Panamerica.

If they need to make "improvements" then up the ante a bit with performance... Not dilute the essence of what is a great car.

Except the IS300 Sportcross (if that's what you're referring to) was $31k MSRP in 2005, almost the price of an STI back then ($32k MSRP). In this case we're not advocating a ton of sheet metal to convert it from a coupe to a sedan, just a coupe to a shooting brake. Instead of sloping down for the car-pillar, slope back and then down to create a shooting brake. I know it's not that simple but we're not talking about a ton of structural changes, just a few tweaks that add a ton of utility and broaden the marketing base for the entire model line.

And just because the shape changes doesn't mean that the driving dynamics get worse, just that it changes. Who knows, maybe it could even improve? (I know, blasphemous )

It's not as if they are going to turn a sports car into an economy car. So I really don't see a problem here. I've always hoped they had a hatch or sedan version.

I rather like it, but I'm partial to most Shooting Brake designs, like BMW's Z3 Coupe, Volvo P1800, MGB-GT, M-B W203 wagon, etc. It certainly gives the car the functionality some people complain about it not having.

There's a small market for this in the US with the stance kids. You know, the ones who will slam them and throw racks on the roof even though they don't ride/surf/snowboard.
