So...I take it you don't want to read through only 57 pages of text? Heheh. The answer is yes, they came back. Some say they were worse, some say quieter...regardless, they obviously didn't fix the problem which is why some of the people are being denied getting a 3rd pump. Subaru knows replacement is futile.

Ugh. Sucks.

I've noticed the crickets are considerably louder when running E85 without the 2-cycle oil. Thinking the 10% ethanol that's in our pump gas is what's attacking the HP fuel pump. Hope they're looking into that aspect.

Got my car over 2 weeks ago and heard the chirp last night after I got home. Although I heard it's not bad for the car mechanically, it's however an annoying sound for a brand new car when it only has 204 miles on it.

So from what I've read:

1. Shell gas seems to be the workaround fix (for some).
2. There's a TSB for this issue to replace fuel but it doesn't permanently fix the issue.

Dear SUBARU, you need step up your game and find a permanent fix and issue a Recall. This is my first Subaru therefore it's not a good idea to leave a bad initial impression

I have had the chirp from 700miles.
I went on a trip Houston-OK-Houston and suddenly the chirp is gone.
You may think it could be the gas, and that was my first thought. but i am already on my second gas tank here in houston, and the chrip has not comeback.
ill keep my ears on it, we could still say that the winter gas is better for it.

To recap the entire thread in a single sentence for newcomers:

The noise is a byproduct seen under normal operation of the Toyota direct injection system.

Um...No. The "chirp" is caused by fuel aeration in the High Pressure Fuel Pump, (cause still under debate, may have something to do with the plunger assembly), whereas the "clicking" is the normal operation of the DI system you refer to.

Please pay attention: CHIRPING ≠ CLICKING.

That and in California there's the Lemon Law

(2) The same problem has been subject to repair four or more times by the manufacturer or its agents and the buyer has at least once directly notified the manufacturer of the need for the repair of the problem as provided in the warranty or owner's manual

Please do some research before spreading this misinformation.

The chirping is part of normal operation. Toyota has said this. Subaru has said this. The only who has ever said otherwise are people in this thread.

Go listen to just about any diesel motor with a direct injection system, or even my Mazdaspeed 3 with a very similar system. They all make this sound. It's a part of normal operation. I've been working on direct injected cars for 4 years now. They make strange noises.

So tell me why my car didn't sound like the way it does now when I picked it up from the dealership. Noises don't magically appear.

The ticking/clicking is normal operation. The chirping is not.

Ok, we can all stop arguing about it now. @Fenrir is here to tell us that none of us know what we are talking about, since he has a ton of Mazda3 experience to draw from! I wish I could diagnose a sound that I haven't heard coming from cars that are several hundred miles away like this guy.

Well said. This forum seems to have a number of non- FRS/BRZ owners who are experts on the car. If the chirping was normal why would there be a TSB on the fuel pump to correct the problem?

The ticking/clicking is normal operation. The chirping is not.
Because the sound comes from heat, mostly. When you first bought the car, it hadn't been through many heat cycles, so the noise hadn't had a chance to exhibit itself. There's thousands of examples of parts that need a chance to break in before falling into normal operation.

I don't have a ton of Mazda3 experience, I have a ton of Mazdaspeed 3 experience, as well as plenty of other direct injected vehicles, to draw from.

I own a BRZ, as would be evident if you looked further than just a forum profile page.

As stated previously, I own a BRZ, and mine makes this noise. I don't worry about it because it's a non-issue. As soon as ANY evidence is produced that shows it has any detrimental effect on anything but my own pride, I'll care about it and seek repair. Thusfar, no such evidence exists.
