My brother's first car was a 92 Neon. Had A/C, Radio, Brakes, Power Steering. Total cost? $200.

Was fun going to Walmart and pointing out all the kid's cars that were more expensive than his lol. Cars that cheap....and in decent shape are fantastic though. Be great to find one for a commuter.

My best friend drives a '94 Nissan Sentra that he loves to death. It has 13" wheels and he hates it because he wants to put new wheels on it but they don't really come in that size.

Mine were fine with solo trips like that so long as I informed them where I was going and when I was coming back. I'd usually tell them what I was doing too if it wasn't already understood. I always kept a cell phone on me(that was really their only rule) and would call or text that I made it, just to ease their concerns. They trusted me, I did errands for them all the time growing up so I know it, but they tend to worry anyway so I try to keep that in mind.

As an adult, even while you're living with them, it's less about asking permission and more about respect. If they mean anything to you for whatever reason, which they sound like they do, you want to protect that respect as much as is reasonable. Mine were the ones I would call if I was in trouble or needed advice. I know not everyone is like that though. Which means it's best to work out any rules or requirements before hand and not just drop this in their laps before you go. If they are unreasonable after that..., it's up to you.

And nothing says you're a child like "I'm 18 I'll do what I want."

Rain doesn't stop anyone. At least in snow there's only idiots - which are still dangerous - and traffic density is far lower.
