It makes no difference to me whether they do it or not, so long as they don't offer it strictly as a hybrid. It would be a great move forward for Toyota to do such a thing, as there are no real hybrid sports cars out right now (CR-Z? Please...). That said I have no interest in one unless they can somehow keep the weight way down and increase power significantly... probably not gonna happen.

Just looking around it seems that every car manufacturer is working on a KERS system for the road.

im not sure if this is a thing... but could you theoretically store the energy from the brakes in a battery, and use the battery to power a supercharger via an electric motor?

Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) in an FR-S: Thoughts?
Tetsuya Tada (Toyota GT-86 / Scion FR-S chief engineer) has said that a turbo'd FR-S/GT86/BRZ would be "untasteful". Instead, he prefers a hybrid power system, similar to the one Toyota uses in F1, which stores electricity from regenerative braking into capacitors, then bolts it out on acceleration.
What are everyone's thoughts on such a system? Do you prefer it over traditional forced induction? Source: http://sciclonic.com/2012/11/rx-for-...-a-hybrid-not/ |

How dafaq would I know if weather i prefer the system used in racecars. Never tried it, and who here would have first hand knowledge of what may or may not pop into a hybrid 86?
But I sure welcome it. If 300 turbo horses are tasteless. Than I would like to see what they come up with! ![]() But I think this thread is better for this discussion. |

It would be awesome to get a Kers system as an option. My Firestorm FRS AT would really love it to dust off a couple of WRXs.

Yeah, short-term the KERS tech is going to be too costly to implement on the 86. Part of the "86 mantra" was it's simplicity and low cost, and I doubt we will have significant enough advancements in the KERS technology to make it economically viable for the 86.
I agree it will probably arrive on the Supra replacement, which isn't as price-focused and more "GT-R hunter" focused. I also prefer the smell of burnt fuel and the roar of a wicked inline 6 or quad cam V8. I like high-revving N/A screamers, as well as the rush from a crazy FI engine and the insta-torque from a big capacity engine. However, the sports car passion must be kept alive and ignoring new technologies and developments is the quickest way to the grave. Look at Australia's auto industry. We were happy supplying to our own market for years and now they're not a global player and will be dead by 2020. Tis a shame, because there is a lot of talent here. Bottom line is: A lot of kinetic energy is lost in braking (transferred into heat energy). There is big potential here. Whether it be KERS or some other form of system, the advancements in efficiency (not fuel efficiency) will lead to some awesome cars. Porsche generally do eveything pretty right, so if they're smashing out a hybrid with the exhausts pointing at the sky, I will listen. I'm hanging out for the hydrogen-powered rotary Mazda are playing with. That sounds interesting.

It can be made for a Lexus version of the FT86. The cost can then be justified.

If it was done, I think they will price it between the 50k range and compete directly with the Porsche Cayman.
