It doesn't take a salesman to understand these concepts, really. Oh and that friend of yours who traded his 07 Si... Did he trade it in for the FR-S/BRZ? Was that trade done this year? Is it the same dealership you're trying to trade your Si to? Do realize that trading a car in works both ways. If there's wiggle room in the price of the new car, they'll take that off and add it to their offer for your trade BUT you don't get the discount on the new car. OR the dealer will offer a low price for the new car but give you a low trade in allowance as well. Very simple. Unfortunately for you, you want a car where there's not much wiggle room on the price. Let's say that Si was traded in this year. $17,500 for trade in, plus at least 2K dealer mark up, and a little bit of haggling room gives us an '07 Civic Si for an asking price of over $20,000. I, for one, will just look at the next car on list on the classifieds. Your buddy probably traded his car in for a '12 Civic/'12 Lexus IS/'12 Accord or whatever car that is getting a complete overhaul for the next model year. Makes sense? Or am I completely off to lunch? |

If you walk into any typical dealership and put down a deposit for a BRZ you're looking at about March or April 2013 for delivery because of the waiting lists. Why would any dealership want to take a loss on a sale when the cars are in such high demand still? Even if they don't sell to you, they'll take deposits on another dozen cars before orders placed now are even delivered, so really the ball is 100% in their court. Until cars are sitting unsold on dealership lots, or supply is greater than demand you won't really get a deal at all on them. To be honest, I'm shocked they aren't selling for $5k over list right now like most other in demand cars do.

a car is a luxury, treat it as such
it is also not an investment, ever, and one of the worst ways to maintain equity unless it's a 1990 corolla, 500 dollars now will be 500 dollars in a year so long as it runs XD XD XD

Considering a brand new SI on MSRP is only $25999.00, roughly $28k'ish after everything. It's not a bad trade in price for a 3 year old car. My local dealer allow me to do a consignment for the vehicle which they sell it on my behalf and taking 10% commission off the selling price (close to private sale pricing) but they would offer me that they'll waive that commission if i'm going to use the money as a down payment for one of their vehicles. If you dont want to spend time selling it privately and want a higher price, try working with some terms with the dealership.

I'd say sell your Civic privately. An Si will sell. If it has modifications, consider posting some classifieds on a local Civic forum. 9 times out of 10 the dealership will low-ball you on the value of your vehicle. As everyone else has said, getting BB you should be surprised with.
With the demand the FRS/BRZ are in, I'm surprised dealers are even offering the option of trade-ins, given that they know the vehicles will sell, they will profit, and they wouldn't have to worry about selling used vehicles. Just my opinion. |

He just nailed it on that one. You need to get your priorities straight. If you want a BRZ, which it seems like you really do, stop modding your current car. I can guarantee it will not increase its value.

The dealer I ordered my FRS from asked if my trade was AT or MT, as soon as I said MT they said they didn't want it... 2009 Yaris 2dr hb. They didn't ask anything else about the car. That's fine I'll put it on kijiji soon as I get a confirm that my FRS will be delivered on time.
