Arbitration is only binding to Toyota - I don't have to follow the advice given but Toyota (Scion) does. The Arbitrator can say that they have to do nothing, that they have to fix it, or that they have to replace the car. If that doesn't get me satisfaction, a lawsuit will be my last course of action available.

1870 miles. After a nice spirited mountain drive I noticed a very slight chirping. It is pretty quiet. Can't hear it while driving, just while idling.

Does it slowly get worse? And what is the bother of the chirping? Does it imply a mechanical failure pending?

Some owners have thought its gotten louder, I guess it depends on how sensitive to it you are. Though ambient temperature does seem to be a factor. And nobody has had a failed fuel pump yet, but of course anything is possible. I haven't noticed any loss of performance or feel since my chirp started a couple months ago.

I appreciate your time to post this response. As my number 1 concern was the pump failing. I have another month of driving at least before I break 3000 miles and take it in for my first oil change.

I took a stethoscope to the pump today, and I don't hear the noise through the tool. I just hear the ticking of the valvetrain. But you clearly hear the chirp from outside. Sounds like a squeaky belt. Goes away at around 750-800rpm. But at the 650 idle it is more pronounced.

I guess the good news is: You can't hear the engine chirping while sideways.

Hmm after reading the threads on these forums is it safe to say that this is a mechanical/design problem?

Glad I don't have this issue (yet?). I originally voted yes, but it was my ac idler. That noise went away on its own or I cannot hear it over the exhaust/intake..

bought 2 weeks ago and just passed 500 miles....don't seem to have any of these sounds.

Engine noises sound normal but a little odd being a flat 4. Definitely can't hear anything strange inside while driving.

Pulled my car out of storage, let it run for about 10 minutes, heard alot of chirping, but suprisingly it does not affect its ability to do donuts

If the car actually starts hesitating or dying ill take it in otherwise i am fine with little noises here and there....

I took mine in today and they said the pump was back ordered, they also verified that even the replacement pumps are continuing to have the issue. They said Toyota is currently working on a fix and that they won't keep throwing pumps at it until they have a solution. Don't know if they are BSing me though

followup on the Lucas oil/safeguard.

Basically after 2-3 tanks of gas with this stuff, i haven't heard the chirp since. The first tank was hit or miss, with some chirps here n there. The 2nd and 3rd tank, it really started to go away. Until toyota/subaru comes up with a legitimate fix, I suggest trying this stuff.

Thanks for doing the research...but I'll live with the chirp instead of spending money to cover up something that I only find mildly annoying.

The lucas is good in general. The buddy of mine which recommended it to me, also stated that it protects the engine from corrosion from the ethanol. $9 for a bottle thats good for 5-6 fill ups. Not too shabby imo.
