After I ordered my FR-S when I was waiting for it for forever I was constantly saying I was more excited to get my car than I had been for Christmas in the past several years. Christmas is a much more exciting time when you're a kid. Now that I'm older and have a job and money, it's just an expensive time of year for me and it makes my bank account cry. Sure, I get stuff in return, but now I struggle to come up with stuff to ask for. XD

There must be some industrial supply stores around you guys? Grainger maybe?

Agreed. I hate shopping for other people. Most of a the people I know are either old enough that they don't need anything so it's all just more clutter or they're still trying to get ahead and I don't know what they need and what they don't. To make things easier for those that feel the need to shop for me, the few things I want I put on a list, with part numbers and website. And what do I normally get, cloths that don't fit, smelly shit that gives me a headache...

It just seems like Christmas is for kids and non-practical people.

What I've been doing with the friends & family that have kids is exchange presents for the kids only. It saves a lot of money and hassle.

That's how it's gotten with my family. My older relatives don't give any hints, so I get some gift cards, then I guess for the others. And a lot of the relatives are doing just kids, so my siblings and I don't get gifts, and we don't get them anything. But the problem with that is figuring out who's participating, and who isn't, so I just bug my parents about it until they tell me who I need to buy for.

A random thought from my old guy stump....

Christmas shopping for a house full of musicians reminds me that I miss record stores.

I'm all for the convenience of digital music (I'm a serious gadget geek) but there is no electronic equivalent to wandering down aisles and aisles of physical media exploring for something new or different, or finding that one nugget of long lost portion of your musical soul or soundtrack of a moment in your life.

It's also sad to think that future generations will not discover those old records/cds/tapes in their parent's attic and discover new music from the past. You pick it up, turn it over, feel it, look at the words and the photos on the liner, its a full sensory experience.

Or, that 200 years from now, when the electronics are all wiped out by sunspots or corroded away by acid rain, there will be no physical media of stars between now and then for someone to figure out how to play.

New really is not always better.

...OK somebody help me off this stump now.

Help you off the stump? Screw that, I'm gonna join you there. I don't have a single downloaded music file, I love sitting in front of my racks of CDs and picking out an old gem. They say that smell is the most powerful memory jogger, and while that may be true, music as an arrangement is MUCH more powerful. After listening to something from high school the other day I had a the weirdest dream. I was in a crowded bar, listening to live music and my high school girlfriend was the one playing the panio. There was nothing sexual about the dream, I was just listening her play again. I hadn't thought about that in years. To be honest, after the dream I had to search my memory to figure out if she even played.

I love the way you put that about the musical soul and the soundtrack to a moment. You really hit that nail on the head. Thanks for bringing up such a wonderful topic. I'm gonna have to give my stereo a visit tonight.
