Splitting lanes isn't illegal in California

But motorcyclist do it because its the worst place for a motorcycle to be. You can hardly see them so just let them go upfront.

But what those guys are doing in the video is pure stupidity. Freaking nabs. -_-

Actually, there was a study on that and it would actually hurt the driver more if they were to open their door. The angle of your door, even fully open will help channel the bike to go inside hitting the steering column, your knees and eventually the driver.

So it would be a good idea to keep your door closed! That is unless you want to get a facefull of a 400 lb motorcycle traveling at 40 mph+!

The CA Lanesharing law is so poorly written that there isn't a specific condition nor speed so CHP can fully enforce. I have gotten pulled over by CHP while spitting lanes only b/c he wasn't aware that was it was legal.

This is all the CHP can say about it...

Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles?
Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner.

Worse case scenario is that they'll write you up for the a:
California Lane Sharing ticket CVC 21658(a) which will get dropped.

I guess they didn't know how many bikes there were. What are 2 cops going to do!!

Maybe if I was in my early 20's I would think that was hot shit but after riding for about 15 yrs, lost 2 buddies in motorcycle accidents, had my fair share of moving violations, that video is a prime example of complete stupidity. It gives those who ride responsibly a bad name and another reason for cops to target riders. Sooner or later they'll get it!

Yeah, on a closed area its cool, but when I ride around them it just makes me nervous. They could do everything right and still crash and bring down everyone behind them.

Or unless his car has suicide doors. LOL
I think it's stupid and dangerous at the same time, why can't we just ride both wheels on the ground?

I literally haven't done anything performance to it. I bought it in mint condition with a Jardine exhaust. I haven't even put 500 miles on it since buying it in april. Weather has been crap in the northeast this year and I worked 50-60hrs a week so I just haven't had the time. Had enough time to pay $750 in insurance for it tho

Yeah, I'm familiar with it, just haven't felt the need to do it. I'm more concerned about finishing my bobber-build but who knows when the hell that'll be done lol

I know this thread is insanely old, but I have to correct some misinformation.

Splitting lanes is NOT illegal in California, although it's also not expressly written that it is legal. It's only legal because it's not illegal, if that makes sense.

I live in AZ and splitting lanes is illegal, but I still do it once in a while. The only time I split lanes is if I feel that it would be less safe to NOT do it. For example, if traffic is backed up on a freeway exit ramp, I'll ride on the shoulder or split lanes to get through because sitting in traffic on a highway ramp, with no car behind me or only 1 car behind me, is VERY dangerous. If I get rear ended, I'll probably die. I never go more than 5ish MPH above what the other cars are going, and I only do it when I feel unsafe by not doing it.

So what are you trying to correct because from what you're saying.. its still stating that lane splitting is legal in California.

lol

I still don't get AZ! You can't lane split yet there is no helmet law!
