OK, well I'm officially interested in the non-dealer fix with silicone then.

Can you report back in a week or so and let me know if it is still stinkin it up?

Silicone spray is the way to go. No smell after the first day. Squeaks have been gone for a couple months after spraying on the three cars we have access to.

I just got back from driving the car and can safely say that the smell is significantly reduced from what it was yesterday. I can still report back in a week if you want, but I'd say go ahead and get the TSB performed based on my expectation of the smell going away even further over the coming days.

Awesome thanks man. I would rather the dealer take care of this under the TSB (their responsibility not mine) so if the smell is getting better that is the route I will go.

Has anyone else had the TSB performed and noticed an extremely noxious odor, almost like gear oil? I'm having to drive with the windows open for now; hopefully the smell will dissipate in short order.
What kind of noise is it still making?
Is it one time "pop" noise when going over a speed bump or a drive way in an angle? (When the body flexes)
Or is it more like a constant "tick" noise at any speed and any surface?

It's a one-time "tick" noise that I hear when driving down the road; I'm not sure about the surface/exact conditions, but when it does happen, it happens once or twice, not constantly.

I am going to try WD40 spray, i thought it was the rear deck/third brake light but i have sound deadened that whole area and all around that little black box. I have to get a tailight ordered but don't think i will let the dealer mess with this problem unless i can't get it fixed myself. I'd rather them not look at my car too close lol.

Mine started to make another type of noise since about a month ago. It is a popping/knocking noise that only happens when the body flexes. When I go over a speed bump or a drive way in an angle, it makes a one time "pop" noise. Sometimes, it's not as loud, which sounds more like a "knock" noise. It seems to be louder when I go left side first. It's definitely coming from the left side. I was suspecting it's the noise that can be fixed by applying the 2nd part of the TSB. Since it's not annoying and I don't want to be messing around removing the trim, I'll just be waiting until my first service that's due next month to get this done.

Believe mine started doing it recently. I get a tapping sound from the passenger side close to the middle (hard to pinpoint exactly) and reseating the back seat doesn't solve it (both locking tabs are down). I don't get it on bigger bumps but rather on very small, light bumps/humps, and seems to do it quite frequently too. Perhaps it's the colder weather. Sounds like a rear deck rattle? Thought it was my tripod making the sound, but I took it out last night and the sound is still there this morning. Warrant of trying some penetrating grease in there?

Also, I noticed there is roughly already a ~2mm gap between the two areas that should be lubed. I put some pressure on the side that makes the noise and it made the same noise I hear while driving, just louder. Only did it once though.

You might be looking at a wrong spot if you see ~2mm gap.
By reading the Subaru TSB, it seems like the exact spot is where the red arrow is pointing in the below picture.

What I'm guess what would work is, press the red circle spot in the below picture. If you press it hard enough, the spot pointed in red arrow in the above picture will open up a little bit. You spray some lube in that opened up spot and you're good to go.

This is just my guess because my noise is totally gone since what I tried that's described in my first post under "quick and easy fix". But I'm just guessing what I described in this post is more proper way, but I just can't try it since I don't have the noise anymore.

I originally did the passenger side, thinking that side was the problem. Sprayed a little grease in the areas that it met and went for a drive. Didn't seem to help anything. So I tried the drivers side and it seemed to help. Doesn't happen nearly as often as it did before. I also noticed that if I drove with the seat down (before I sprayed the drivers side) that it didn't make the ticking noise as often, but more of a humming/vibration/rattling.

Also, does the top of your rear deck move a lot (area that the third brake light attaches to)? Like I can push on the top of it and it tilts. Easier to lift with seat down, since you can grab it. All the clips are attached and I know the tinter who took it out previous put all 4 tabs back in that make a loud noise.

Here's a vid of the noise before any grease was applied.
