Automatic Transmission Fluid Change
just found out froma toyota dealer that the "slush" box
tranny fluid requires a change-out at 100,000 miles initially,and then every 30,000 miles thereafter!.can anyone verify this?..thanks! |

Given my luck with automatics, I'd change it out a bit sooner for piece of mind. YMMV.

You're not going to hurt it by changing it too often. I'd agree with others saying sooner is better than later.

I haven't checked the manual either, but I recall back in the day my mecahnic always told me to change the AT fluid around 30k miles. But I figure with the advancement in fluid technology these days should have improved that a bit? Maybe 50k miles is a good figure.

Yeah 40-50k should be good, the auto trans is one thing I do recommend sticking with the factory fluid. Do not use any ATF labeled "global" for sure.

So you shouldn't use something from motul or Royal Purple for the AT fluid? Hmm I'll keep that in mind.

I'm not going to, however if you end up with much higher than stock hp and torque you may want to use a high performance fluid i just don't know if there is anything compatible.

If you want your slushbox to last you should probably change it frequently.
Many of the auto makers with "lifetime" ATF fluids are really only designed for ~100K miles. By that point they are out of warranty and not their problem anymore. In any slushbox cars I own, I would change every 30K for peace of mind. |

If you plan on doing this yourself... good luck changing it out correctly.
The process is harder than launching nuclear missiles. I remember reading the instructions and thinking... WTF!!! ![]() IT'S NO JOKE AND NOT AS SIMPLE AS DRAIN AND REFILL! Check out the online BRZ shop manual listed in the sticky section of this thread for the instructions. Again... good luck. |

I've just been reading up on the AT fluids in our twins. It appears to be hygroscopic. Given that I've been AutoXing my car and done a dyno pull or 3 on it I'm thinking that I want to get it changed. Right now I have just over 20K on the car.
Can some of the more knowledgeable members chime in on what mileage would be best for a change interval?

I plan on doing mine at 30k, its cheap insurance and even if you drive like a grandma i would still do it at 45k. I drive mine pretty hard so changing the rear diff every 12-15k and trans fluid every 30k is a good idea if you plan to keep the car a long time.
This is just my opinion, no real data to back it up. I have been doing parts on the dealership level for 10 years now so i do have a little experience. |
