Just got pulled over yesterday. Cop looked at my plate (in a grimspeed towhook kit) and told me that he was getting ready to write me a second ticket, since he didn't see it. He mentioned something as well about it being illegal in the wiondow, and that he was impressed with the kit.
Spend a little cash and put it on there, imho. Could save some $$ over time. |

What if your dealer forgot to give you paper plates for the front, because you asked them not to drill holes. Do i get a grace period?

For the sake of safety, I would just invest in a license plate relocation kit, such as the ones offered by Perrin.

Metal plates on the dash of a brand new car look like you haven't had the time to install or unfinished. Please leave that behaviour for other owners many years from now, and to driver's who like to have clutter in the interior. Please install front plate, relocated or not, or no plate at all.
LEA's really don't like the plate on the dash either, and it is potentially dangerous. Why wait for the data of actual damage/injury if their is a common-sense-generated possibility that it may cause unintended consequences? Tickets are easier to pay than a cut to the head can heal. Eric G |

Ohio also, I do not believe I will be putting on the front plate. My wife said she will let me have the first one before she starts bitching. I may just put it on the dash. |

Anyone know the law of Virginia requiring front plates?
More importantly, the penalty for not having one? Is it a fine or points violation? |

i don't know why a lot of you guys make such a big deal about the front license plate issue. I just told my dealer go ahead put it on the bumper, nice and center. It looks weird having a plate on the side.

I live in Dallas right by a police station and havent had any issue not having a front plate, dont even carry it with me. Even if things change i wouldn't put it on my dash, i'll leave that for the 16 year old who gets it in 16 years.. |

Another Ohio owner here. No front plate on my BRZ (or Mini or Mustang or Miata). I live out in the country and drive mostly at night, very rarely get hassled for no front plate. In fact, the only time I've gotten pulled over for it was once about 8-10 years ago, and it was because I had the plate in the windshield and not on the front bumper (also had a full cage in the car and gutted interior at the time). The deputy sheriff had a chat with me and let me go on my way without a ticket. I'm willing to pay $80-100 every couple of years for a ticket for no front plate if it comes to that, but so far it hasn't. If I would ever start getting frequently hassled about it, I'd come up with some no-drill solution, either an off-the-shelf solution, or a DIY one.

I guess I'll take my chances for a bit and put the plate on the dashboard

Ohio here as well.
No front plate and a Trooper nailed me coming home one morning doing 50 in a 35. Turns to 45 once you change cities but whatever, I was busted. He was coming the opposite way from me on this 2 lane road, so he waves me to pull over and turns around behind me. Tells me he's got me speeding and noticed I didn't have a front plate on. Give him my cards and he comes back a few minutes later. I want to say it was Labor day weekend, because he gives me some speech about how they don't want him giving out warnings during the holiday weekend and he has to crack down etc. Decided to write me a ticket for no front plate instead of the speeding ticket. The fine was about the same but saved me two points on my license. I'll take it.

If you don't want to pay the occasional ticket(I've gotten 2 in 20 years: 1 ticket, 1 warning), just act surprised by the missing front plate. "what?!?, it was there last night!". Still get a ticket, but this one is dismissible by the court clerk without needing to even set foot into a courtroom.
Instead, you'll be setting foot inside the tax collection office most likely in the same building as the courthouse where you will be purchasing your new set of plates. The one time I did this for the first pullover it cost less than $8...yes, eight dollars. I'm sure the cost has increased since then, but not by much. Now you bring the receipt for the new plates to the clerk, and it gets dismissed for the nominal fee of $10, the same procedure and cost as taking care of a ticket for not having your license or insurance card on you(left at home for example). |

Well, got pulled over for no front plate yesterday.(Live in a small town of around 13k folks, cops don't have much to do.) Was just was given a warning by a cop who looked to be about 16 years old. Funny thing is after I pulled away I drove downtown 1 block away and passed 2 other cars with no plates. And by the time I finished my trip across town and back home I had passed 6 other cars with no front plates. That cop sure is going to be busy. - Gotta love Ohio.
Now trying to decide to go with the ugly side mount options or drill holes into my baby or just stay the course until get ticket... have to admit happened lot faster than I ever imagined, as I don't drive the car very much. Bought the car on Nov. 3rd and put 300miles on from the drive home from dealer - Just turned 1000miles so only average around 175miles a month basically. |
