As of right now I have not heard of nor seen any issues regarding FI on this motor, short of frying clutches...which is pretty much expected. I asked a similar question in my thread regarding what would break first and since no one really knows all we can do is wait and see. Some people think the ring lands will go first but seeing the stock pistons I don't really think that's gonna be the case. The con rods are already pretty beefy, which you can see in the Full Blown post about their 1000+ HP rods, I'd say they will happily contend with 500ish HP with no issues, but it remains to be seen, because i am sure we might see some stretching when people start pushing the redline higher to get more legroom in the RPM band. As for heat...well it would be silly to run a high HP setup without an external oil cooler, it's one of those things that makes up those "proper supporting mods" that people don't seem to take into account when they do the math concerning an FI install.
I'm gonna go with the diff being the weak link since the stock gearing is way short for the power we are seeing coming out of these FI setups. It won't be long before there are taller ratios built for high power but at the moment the only real option is Lexus IS final gearing kits which aren't really made for high power applications. The other thing I expect to fail pretty quickly is the stock rings, dunno how hard they are, but with the boost adding additional pressure to the rings they may wear faster and cause blow by. Simple enough to fix, but I haven't seen any offerings from performance brands regarding piston ring kits for FI applications. |

![]() Yes I suspect the same thing. The stock rear diff is deff not a race application. As for the gear ratio I don't think that should be an issue. Shorter gear ratios can be in the favor under 400WHP. I mean who really goes over 150MPH on a track? Or who needs to. It's mainly about how fast it gets there. This car wasn't exactly made for a straight line. This we all know or else we wouldn't have bought our twins! And if you bought this car for a straight line maybe you should consider trading it in for a supra. Stock clutches have been burnt. So what HP applications have burnt these clutches? Do they handle 300WHP responsibly? when do they start "slipping" Sorry if you already have posted this I was bored at work and didn't recall seeing anything about this sort of topic. Also if there is one thing I learned about boosted Boxer engines is that they are usually closed deck. This is an open deck. So there are some changes in this FA engine then the EJ engines i'm used to seeing. |

I'm also wondering if the Crawford built short blow is really a viable option for a turbo'd application. I know they make awesome pistons but is it really needed? Maybe we can get some professional input?

As for the gearing...the shorter gearing being subjected to higher power leads to much more shock in the driveline. Taller ratios aren't necessarily intended for higher speed, they are intended to make better use of the power generated. Remember any power that causes loss of traction is wasted power, taller gearing can help to reduce wheel spin and better transfer that power to the ground...and in the case of our car can help make the rear end more controllable, as fun as it is to be sideways, sometimes it's just as fun to hit a turn just right at the raw edge of traction. So for those of us who want to maintain some semblance of traction when the power is on, taller gearing helps alot with that. Also who really goes 150mph on a track? Well if I can I do, I used to love my liter bikes because there are quite a few tracks you can break 150mph easily. If I have the ability to go that fast I would definitely go that fast...key word is ability though, that includes how comfortable I am with what I am riding/driving ![]() Quote:

![]() I myself have gone 160 in my STi plenty of times on straights in good weather at the track. ![]() I see what you mean about the taller gear ratio but that might get spendy in the long run. I don't see a problem with the current gear ratio sitting around 300WHP if you run a wider tire. Around a 18x9-10in. I believe for a normal person 300WHP would be perfect for the average autoX/weekend track guy. ESP if you DD the car. ![]() BUUUTTTTT I would love to see a taller gear ratio 400+WHP FRS with some 18x10+ wheels on the track..... I could only imagine the track times.

I for one want an engine to blow. That might seem like an odd request but how do you know what goes wrong until it breaks? These cars as a whole aside from the clutch have been taking more abuse than rihanna and have no scars from it. We have a great platform from drag racing to track applications. When a motor blows, ull know about it.
