Project FR-S Phase 2 Dyno

The Rollers At Evasive Reveal More Power After Installing HKS’s Racing Suction, Header & Front Pipe

By Bob Hernandez

December 05, 2012

Next week will be a big one for Project Garage FR-S. That’s when we expect our HKS supercharger kit will arrive and we can begin our boost adventure. Until then we’ve been busy installing odds and ends bolt-ons, getting our car ready for its biggest power adder yet.

We secured more HKS grip in the way of its exhaust front pipe and header to go with the Spec-L cat-back we previously attached; furthermore, we opted out of the Premium Suction intake and replaced it with HKS’s Racing Suction system. Since the car is doing more utilitarian A-to-B driving at the moment (and not track duty), we ditched the Toyo RS1 slicks for Nitto NT05 max performance radials sized 245/40R18 in front and 285/35R18 rear.

For the sake of charting continuity, we decided to go back to Evasive Motorsports to have them test the effectiveness of the upgrades to Scion’s 4U-GSE boxer engine on the shop’s Mustang dynamometer. Weeks ago when we first dynoed our FR-S in stock trim, it netted a peak horsepower of 157 at about 7,000rpm and a peak torque of 128 foot pounds at 4,900.

After the baseline pulls we stepped it up ever so slightly, installing HKS’s Premium Suction intake and Spec-L exhaust. We also swapped out the factory Michelin Primacy HP summer tires for Falken Azenis RT-615Ks, and the dyno day resulted in 162 peak horses and 130 lb.-ft. of peak torque.

Our most recent trip to Evasive had the FR-S outfitted in HKS header, front pipe and Racing Suction intake. These were also our first pulls with much wider running gear in the back, Nitto NT05 285/35R18s; up to this point we had only made passes with 215-wide rubber at the rear.

The good news is the numbers continued to increase, with the clearest improvement to peak horsepower; the FR-S picked up another few, averaging 165 through the handful of pulls we made. Unfortunately there appeared to be no increase in peak torque, although even there we found good news, as it seems after all of our modifications we found the torque curve to be more linear. The dip in the curve between 3,250 and 4,900 is now less severe, and torque even increases from about 4,900 through to 6,250 rpm.

The bolt-ons are all well and good, but we can’t wait to get the HKS blower set up. Once this key element is in place we will return to Evasive to have our project car tuned and see what kind of damage we can do on the rollers.

^ I agree. I love that green on the car. I would name it "Bullit", even though it is a lighter shade is green.
