Credit unions by far. I'm in So Cal and use Pacific Marine. My first car loan ever was through them and got me $15000 financed for 60 months at about 2.5% interest. I'll be using them for my BRZ loan as well. They now are offering as low as 1.49% on auto loans depending.
I'm 22 by the way. I'd imagine someone around my age will require a cosigner for their first auto loan. I didn't have a good cosigner but wanted to establish credit, so I did a share secured loan and put up $15,000 of my own money as collateral rather than simply pay cash for the car. I made my payment every month (around $265 I think) and that would free up that amount minus interest in the account holding the "collateral money", so I essentially had a $15 monthly car payment while establishing credit.

The worst advice I read above is taking money out of a 401K plan. That would be VERY expensive. Another question was: "Would my credit score be better if I had a co-signer?" NO. Maybe AFTER you have paid off the loan. "Would the RATE be less?" Maybe or Probably Not. One just gets to have the opportunity for the rate discussed at the time. Would I EVER co-sign for a loan? NEVER! Not even for baby daughter - unless she just got an MBA from Harvard and has a five year contract from a top ten law firm in New York. But then she wouldn't need a cosigner, or a car. Best place for a loan: Shop around. Things keep changing. Be sure to check with a local Credit Union. |
