if your friend is coming from an crz to an sti it just depends how fast he can adapt to the new car its way faster than the crz and the awd is completely different from the fwd crz. how long has he been autoxing the sti?

Autocross usually has a safeguard for hard launches for unfair starts, namely, a tight S shape tuinnel of cones on it's side at the very start.

Unless the course has long and wide turns and 1 long straight, the FR-S' lightness and agility will make mince meat out of an STi stock for stock in a small track. Ask any MX-5 or Minis at an autocross event to see if they are scared of EVOs or STis. On a proper higher speed circuit, the MX-5s, FR-S, S2000, RX8's will have a much tougher time as the STi wouldn't have to use as much brake and let off the turbo.

The STi is fast, but on a small and tight course (such as autocross), it needs more braking distance, has less throttle response, it's heaviness and the inherent understeer of the AWD system will all make hugging around the cones a more difficult prospect.

Fast does not always equal quick.

Yeah, I could see that if the distance from the start to the first corner in the circuit was close, but the last time I AutoXed, you could get up to around 55 before the first turn, and that was in my FR-S. Also, fast = quick. You mean agile.

Fast is quick.... Rubber makes a significant difference favoring the sti

I went autocrossing with my rx-8 group a couple of years back. I believe my friend with his complete stock rx-8 was about 6-7 seconds faster than evos IVs and older STIs. But then again, he's competing in national competitions now

We both started auto xing about the same time 5 monthes ago. He just got thr sti yesterday thou

If he is new to driving the STi he will have his hands full figuring out the understeer, etc. You need a momentum course where you can hold speed through most of the course. If it is tight with lots of slowing and accelerating you will have to work hard to stay close to the STi. Good Luck- we are all counting on you.

Well I got some new tires, the awd also makes the car heavy & turbo adds lag for a small coarse such as auto x

What types of speeds are you seeing in these events?

The GR STi is just such a poorly set up car from the factory. It is soft & floaty, feels like a boat. The understeer is a test to your patience. I autocrossed my '11 STi a few times (when my s2k was down). It was just a horrible/waste of time.

Like I stated on my last post... given equal drivers, I do not see how a GR STi can pull faster times at an autocross.

Course and the driver mod are everything. I think the BRZ would be a much better auto-x car though. The AWD doesn't really help with auto-x. The turbo lag kills it unless its a corvette style course and the STI is just too heavy in comparison. Only real downside to the BRZ is the crappy tires.
