My car has been with my local dealership for two days now with this issue. They've been working with Toyota to diagnose it. I finally got a call today that they've found the problem to be a spot weld (which has already been covered in this thread) and they'll need it another day to have the weld fixed at the body shop.

I hope that this experience prompts head office to consider or even write a TSB, rather than considering this a one-off occurrence.

Got the plastic-bottle-cracking noise today after 6 months of ownership and 3250 miles. Read thru all the posts here and settled on the WD40 brand of lithium grease which fixed 99% of the noise (for now). My thanks to "Sigh-on-Rice for his tenacity in trying to come up with a fix for us all!

Car’s back in the shop, now it is getting two new tail lights due to condensation in both of them and hopefully this time they found where the rattle was coming from. I have to say everyone from Boch Toyota South service and the factory tech has been very helpful on this. They are really trying hard to get everything on this car fixed and i appreciate that! However, after having to get a new ECU, tail lights, and bringing it in three times for the rattle in the right rear if this thing isn’t fixed this time i’m all done with it!

Thanks to everyone for sharing the dealer experience and the DIY fix experience.
Today makes it 2 months since I sprayed WD-40. I've put 2200 miles and still 0 pop.

Just reporting back...

I sprayed silicone spray into the rear crevices a couple months back and haven't heard a single pop since.

This is better than I thought. I figured I'd be spraying every other week or so -- just like I'm adding 2-cycle oil to my fill-ups every other time.

1st Year Problems!

Well my FR-S is all fixed. They replaced the ECU, rear tail lights, and they fixed the rattle in the rear. The rattle was caused by a broken bracket near the passangers side rear of the bumper. This part rattled at speeds over 60mph and drove me nuts but it's all fixed now so hopefully no more problems! The factory tech and everyone at Boch Toyota South was very helpful on this. I do have to say they did a good job!

I had the first part of the TSB performed and unfortunately the rear shelf still makes noise. The dealer attempted to do the second part involving the removal of the interior trim but couldn't figure out how to safely do so. I'd still like to have it done at some point but the grease they're using for the TSB is extremely noxious. Has anyone else had the TSB performed and noticed an extremely noxious odor, almost like gear oil? I'm having to drive with the windows open for now; hopefully the smell will dissipate in short order.

Ah shit, not what I wanted to hear. I'm due to have the TSB done on my car at dealership for rear deck noise on Monday the 23rd. You can smell it even with the back seats in normal up position?
