As far as I know, "learning" new sensors isn't possible. The new sensor IDs have to be written to the ECU (body control unit?) via Techstream or a tool like the ATEQ Quickset or VT30 through the OBDII port. The sensors are constantly broadcasting but the car will never look for another set of IDs that are not in the computer.

I put Blizzak WS-70's on the stock rims with TPMS. Haven't been able to test in ice or snow yet though.

Still not convinced this is going to be the long term scenario because I don't understand how this system works.

report #2: Dove to the airport, light came on in about 20 miles. 4 days later, returned home, car sat overnight and the next day the light was off. I am now convinced it is sensing the TPMS in the tires stacked next to it. Could the energy source be the tire pressure?

The sensors have batteries in them. That's why they will eventually need to be replaced. Tire pressure has nothing to do with the power for the sensors. It is only the parameter that the sensors monitor.

Thanks. I found a Toyota Rav 4 TPMS description that seems to fit: http://rav4world.com/pdf/2006/tirepres.pdf

Some of the info:

This transmitter operates with a lithium battery, which lasts approx. 10 years.

If the lithium battery is depleted, replace the entire tire pressure warning valve and transmitter assembly.

If the battery voltage drops, the tire pressure warning antenna and receiver stores the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) in its memory.

If the voltage drops even further and the transmitter stops working, it stores the DTC in memory and illuminates the tire pressure warning light to alert the driver.

Each transmitter has a built-in semiconductor to directly measure the tire pressure.
