New article - JDM spec "Review From The Backseat"
Tongue-in-cheek article, mostly the author making fun of his inability to get into the backseat. Also an interesting insight into the differences of the Japanese versus US marketing machine.
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...spec-in-japan/ My biggest question - why does the JDM get nice exhaust tips and the FR-S has those stupid tips within tips?

I was told the USDM exhaust tips was made because the JDM exhaust tips protruded beyond the body of the car. US law restrict exhaust tips that go pass the frame.

Oh, I know I can get tips - among other exhaust pieces - I'm more complaining about the stupid stock design they hung on the car. Who thinks those tips (and smaller pipe-within-a-pipe) look good?

I've never heard of that - NHTSA rule? I mean, the NHTSA doesn't bother to enforce bumper height and headlight height - hence the stock trucks and other large vehicles that override sedans and smaller cars. Ford even recognized this with the Expedition and built a secondary beam in because they did not want to feel guilty killing innocent people with their design.

I saw plenty of cars ( sports, sedan, suv) all with exhaust tips stick out longer than the bumper. Only the USDM had that below/ under.

EXHAUST SYSTEM AND MUFFLER - Excessive noise is prohibited. Excessive noise is defined in DMV regulations. Check will be made for muffler cutout, leaks in muffler and exhaust system and a straight exhaust or any extension or device on the tail pipe which will cause excessive or unusual noise. Engine or motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent excessive fumes or exhaust smoke. All pipes carrying exhaust gases from the engine shall be constructed and maintained with a leak proof metal and shall be directed from the muffler, or mufflers, toward the rear of the vehicle and approximately parallel with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and approximately parallel to the surface of the roadway. On passenger vehicles exhaust pipes should extend beyond the rear axle or the side. Properly located and shielded side exhaust may be allowed when in compliance with departmental side exhaust standards. Passenger vehicles equipped with exhaust pipes exiting to the side, forward of the rear axle, must extend rearward beyond any passenger door openings. Exhaust header pipes extending to the outside of vehicle frame rails must be shielded from excessive heat and not protrude beyond the extreme outer edge of the front or rear tires, whichever is narrower, so as not to pose a hazard to occupants or pedestrians.
