Traffic around the Bay is brutal, I hear ya. Short shift like crazy, if traffic is crawling try to roll around in 3rd or 4th at a low speed if you can and leave big gaps, it really really helps the mpg. In fact that is close to the ideal scenario for constant load mpg. Turn off the engine at lights too. Automatic transmissions think <1500rpm is good enough for the engine to be running with moderate load, so be sure to keep shifting up! Oh I just noticed you have an AT, shift to neutral when stopped. Halves the idle consumption or so.

My car weighs 600lb less and has 0.2 L less displacement, so it's easier to get good mpg but 27mpg in traffic moving at 5mph and stopping relatively frequently is about what I can get. Most of the fuel burn in traffic comes from the engine running but barely ever doing useful work.

Those hills in the city are horrible though, they have stupid stop signs everywhere.

However you have a nice relaxed cruising gear, so those highway miles should be "freebies".

You shouldn't be coasting in neutral downhill, that's worse for mileage. In the vast majority of new cars (I believe '05 and later) the car will detect what's going on and shut off the injectors allowing gravity and momentum to keep the engine turning over and the accessories powered. When you coast in neutral you'll need to burn fuel to keep the engine turning over and power flowing to all your accessories.

Coast in gear, your car was designed for it.

Also for those who are getting poor mileage (<25 mpg), not sure if it's been posted before but you're in the minority:
