Each to their own, but I'm also not feeling this. But then again I've never been a big fan of European cars to begin with.

As long as your happy and satisfied with your purchase then that's all that matters

Its true that in an ideal world rear wheel drive is better, but there are many great front drive cars on the market too.
I'm not being elitist, and I didn't waffle on about purity not sure where that came from. Anyways GL with it, any mod plans?

Also, don't equate sales volume to impact on the motoring market. The Beetle sold 21 million units, but that doesn't mean we're all punting around with rear mounted engines, does it.
Practical everyday cars with some performance elements spelt the demise of the pure sports car. I still think they're dead. Only a select few will have success in the years to come. Do you think we'll look back in five years and see a sea of cheap RWD coupes? Of course not. The 86 wouldn't have made half the splash it did if it came from someone other than Toyota. If it were a Subaru only venture it would be ridiculed for not being a proper Subaru AWD. The hook came with the name 86. The funny thing is, very few people who buy 86s have driven a Hachi. It's clever marketing but it's also making a car that has its own segment.

Porsche do seem to win evo Magazine COTY every second year or so and they are still regarded as the best sports cars. Perhaps we should be driving RR cars, seeing as we're all enthusiasts. I find it funny that you don't consider the Beetle revolutionary. It spawned a whole brand of world renown sports cars.

At the end of the day I find it funny that what started as a thread about my new car has turned into a bunch of guys defending the 86. The only bad thing I said about the car was it wasn't practical enough for me. The cavalry rushed in to defend the 86. I like the car still, but it wasn't right for me. Sure , I trolled. But only after the reactions we so lame from some.

Depends which brands and also which cars within each brand as they're not all that great. Not wantign to sound like a snob but the only jap car makers that are close to the build quality of the midd range euro are Lexus (I know it is a Toyota) and Subaru. And Nissan! But then again depends on which model we talk about.

From Renault, I was lucky enough to get close and tender with Renault 5 , Maxi Megane (in its glory days..what a fantastic car) and only a close look at the new RenaultSport N4.

Congrats on your purchase mate. At the end of the day it is your happiness all that matters. Light, nimble, decent power to weight ratio, tuned suspension = fun. well...add RWD = Super fun. but that is just my opinion!!!

The thing with others...well think about it buddy and I am not judging or pointing a finger at anyone. When you purchase a different car other than the one that most of the people here are passionate/obsessed about, they will think you made the wrong decision without taking in consideration the fact that we're all different and have different needs. Plus there is emotional attachement to the brand. So...You are the one "that got away" So it is "normal" for some to react this way!
Enjoy it and maybe bring it around to some meets to show it off.:happy0180:

Actually I've seen far more people saying 'congrats on your purchase but that its not for them' then really defending the 86...

Spec wise they are pretty close. I'd love Wheels or Motor mag to do a proper comparison between the two. Personally I prefer RWD and having driven a number of FWDs, AWDs and RWDs over the years I can definitely tell the difference between the drivetrains.

Congrats on the Clio. Enjoy

In the Euro summer I drove around with me olds in a brand spanking new Clio Estate Diesel & I was impressed with it. We did thousands of k's & it never gave us problems. It was a little gutless but a good car with lots of std features & comfy. Can only think that the Trophy cars be a whole lot lot better ! The sticker price on the 86 was the clincher for me, another $10K & I may have never even considered it.

I wish you well with your new toy, Renault build good cars too.

in a straight line...

go for it.

just check your rear view mirror ... ill be doing this.

Congrats dude... you go to be happy with the car you want.
Dunno about the yellow. Red accents would have looked great with the red brakes.

By the way, i got lots of boot space in the 86... I pulled out the spare and all the useless foam inserts. Boot looks dodgy but works for me.
