I think the low weight of the car will help big time though. |

From what I've read I would say its a unique new design gearbox, as in not a current part for either manufacturer. It should be a good one by all accounts, as the FT-86 seems to be designed for modifying. I can't see it being a total let down...
Lets look at it... Boxer engine, so quite a low down output shaft, Subaru doesn't currently make Front engine, rear wheel drive cars, so no off the shelf gearbox from them. Toyota, only 6sp manual gearbox I can think of currently in use is from the Lexus IS, and I would imagine that is a pretty fat heavy beast (Its used in a Diesel in the UK), and probably will not fit with the low, rear slung (close to the bulkhead) engine, and into the transmission tunnel available As they are building the car to be able to have an existing Subaru engine dropped in (reason for same mounting points. If they didn't want other, i.e. turbo engines they would change the mounting points as they seem to have changed a hell of a lot with the 'new' engine...... I would expect it will be OK up to around 350-400Bhp, obviously with a uprated clutch though

I know this may sound odd, but would it be possible for the FRS to be in par (with say, an air filter, exhaust, and a reflash of the Ecu ) with a VW R32? 240hp and about 3400 lbs. Are the specs of that. Thanks!

Since we are still hot on the tranny/gearbox issue, it occurred to me to add that, if the design of the car calls for the engine to be positioned low and rearward, and if the tranny will be in front with the engine, then the stick shift could very well be mounted "in" the transmission, instead of mounted, as it often is, at a distance from the transmission. In the latter case, the gear shift is actuated by wires (cables). In the former, it is a mechanical linkage. The direct feeling of the mechanical "in the transmission" gearbox is what we want, although I should be quick to add that Porsche and many other fine automakers use cable gearbox linkages.

we don't know. ![]() But i can tell you these are two different cars...and R32...let alone ALL VW are just fun quick cars...not FAST cars. Infact....even all VW get the same engines now even the new Beetle. VW seems to rely on their engine and package to pull the fun out. Not technical balance as with the FRS. But i believe a full exhaust system may pull out 25hp out of this car....which is plenty enough if you don't want to "ruin the balance" |

^^ Cyber', I thnk Miguel is asking this:
What would 200 hp/approx. 2500 lbs. do against 240 hp/3400 lbs.? Would the weight advantage offset the hp deficit? |

FR-S power to weight ratio = 1:12.5 R32 power to weight ratio = 1:14.2 Seems like the FR-S has a leg up due to weighing nearly half a ton less.

no problem. Just don't put too much faith in those numbers since we don't know the official weight of the FR-S yet

VW should have a new motto, "Most fun you'll have... on your way to get it repaired."

so true! and the reason i say that is because my friend's R32 ALWAYS and i really mean ALWAYS has the Check engine light on! I know it's very cliche, but i kid you not, they've tried to get it fixed (theres nothing wrong with the car though) and it always comes back! I guess it's true then
