Thanks for the words everyone. It was crazy to see this happen right in San Diego, but I guess that is life. Here is one more of the team.

A friend of ours saw what happened and is wanting to rehome her puppy in need to us. I am undecided as I am still in recovery mode from the tragedy that occurred only 4 days ago, but at the same time, I think this dog is almost exactly what my wife will want to get once she is ready anyway. It is an 11 week old female Chihuahua Yorkie mix. My wife wants to adopt the next dog rather than buying from a breeder because she is a very strong believer in rehoming and helping the dogs who need it. So I don't know, but it may be a good choice. We will see how we feel when we meet her.

Going through this thread makes me realize I need another pup. Maybe one day when I've got less traveling to do.

how well behaved are the shibas? my sister had 2 of them (one got hit by a car, so she got a second). the first was awesome. very calm with her other dog, usually listened, but the second one was very rambunctious, very hyper so she got rid of it when she got pregnant

Of the ones I've been around they are either extremely relaxed, or very active. The active ones need yards, a lot of walking, etc. The relaxed/chill ones just need normal walks, etc and some space to do whatever they want to do.

I prefer the ones that just like to chill out

see, the hyper one HAD space to run around, and it still was very bad with her other dog (golden retiever/lab mix - sweetest dog EVER but it shed like a mofo) so she was worried what it'd be like with a baby

Their behavior is easiest described as like half dog and half cat. They look like dogs and play like dogs, but unlike most dogs that come running when you call them. They will gingerly walk over to you and decide whether or not you will get to pet them. Most of the petting and cuddling is done on their terms. Shibas are very clean and don't usually have a strong "Dog" scent, but they do shed alot! They are very independent and therefore can be territorial and Stubborn. They still have a natural instinct to hunt and will run off when they catch a scent if not trained properly. They always seem to have there own agenda. They are definitively a dog that needs to be trained and socialized as a puppy, because it is harder to do later on. There loyalty comes slower than most dogs and it almost seems like they think that they don't need you, but when it does happen you will know it. They don't always have to be "all up on you" like most dogs, they are more than content just being in the same room with you or following you around the house. Shiba Inus are not prone to barking.

We got Kiba when she was a puppy and reading up on Shibas we socialized her a lot with other dogs and people and trained her to the best of our knowledge. She is very cat like and will only come to you if she is in the mood to be petted, wants to be petted or you have food, otherwise she will just look you over and walk away. When she gets her fill of petting which is only usually after a couple minutes she will walk away. She can sit, lay down, stand up, crawl, and shake hands, but only if she is certain she will get a treat. She gets pretty wild when she plays but sleeps most of the day. Kiba never barks at noises or people, but she does speak to us all the time in her "Shiba Inu" voice when she wants something. She is now about 1.5 years old.

Akio was a Rescue we adopted as a companion for kiba. He is more obedient and calm than Kiba. We attribute this to Kiba being spolied for most of her life and being slightly younger. Akio has a totally different personality than Kiba, he listens more and always seems so serious and all business. He doesn't play nearly as much as Kiba and it's seems like he is always on "the watch" guarding us from intruders. He always lays facing the nearest door even when everyone is home. He barks a lot compared to Kiba, but not nearly as much as other dogs. When we got him we found out that he already knew alot of tricks. He can sit, laydown, stand, shake, high five with one or both paws and best of all fake dies when you pretend you are shooting him with a gun! He has and allergy so has to be on a strict diet and medication, otherwise his skin get really pink and irritated and his coat start falling out. He Looked really bad when we first got him and was about to be put down, he looked like a zombie dog. Therefore his middle name is zombie in Japanese. He looks a million time better now, but still doesn't have his bushy tail back yet. He is approximately 3 years old according to the vet.
