It's more likely that the FRS transmission wont be able to take as much power as the STI, since they're not the same and not designed for the same purpose. I have a feeling that the STI trans swap will be popular like Supra transmission & rear end swaps were for the 86. The t-50 and the rear diff would explode after 160 hp.

And this interview is really insightful (unlike this thread ). Thanks for posting!

STI tranny is strong... and only strong for AWD. When you make it RWD (swap the ring in the cen-diff), rear-diff can't handle the hp/tq result after +400hp most of the time rear-diff blows up. On FRS side, it was meant for RWD, so rear-diff will able to take the beating (so I hope)... but again that's all guessing, I haven't seen the tranny for FRS and their spec yet. I can't say for 100%, but from what Tada-san have been doing to this car, I think I can say safely that it'll be strong tranny

I agree and I think the diff and tranny engineering choices are hard to predict from where we are standing.

Happily, the _Road and Track_ article said that Toyota was going to over-engineer the car, in anticipation that tuners would be upping the power output, so some nice things may come on the car from the factory (e.g., frame rigidity, abundant suspension). But, again, it's hard to say precisely, given the current intel.

Wolfpacks2k, I totally disagree about the "not offering automatics in the American coupes they would sell well". The s2k and a couple of the cars you mention could never outsell a Mustang/Camaro. And how do you figure that most people will learn the manual just to purchase it?

This isnt a mustang or camaro, lol. Those cars pack 300hp base.

What's that suppose to mean? We are talking about manual tranny only sports cars compared to sports cars that come with both. Automatic plays a big part in the sales of a lot of sports coupes believe it or not. If Toyota/Subaru sells 40k copies in N.America, I bet at least 15-20k of them will be automatic.

Driving a car with bigger engine and more torque, the difference isn't as noticeable. But with a 4 banger the difference in power from a Standard to an Automatic is far more noticeable. That is what they are suggesting.

I know this. I figured it out with cars like the G35/37,350Z,GC 3.8 V6,335i etc. I also have to agree with you on the automatic being much weaker in feel than the manual. But I also hear people complain about the manuals feeling weak on torque also. N/A 2.0 liters and under seems to be inherently torqueless unless the engine is strapped to -1900 lbs of curb weight.

I wasn't saying that it is so, as I have no experience on this subject . I was clarifying.

I might even wager that the number of automatic sales would beat manual sales, especially since the number of people who know how to even drive standard is dwindling. LOL! Standard may not be "standard" for much longer.
