The status quo being "anything other than putting the widest possible tires on every autox car regardless of class, is a 'terrible idea'."

And accessibility is a joke because unless you pick one of the chosen halo cars (miata, lancer evo, civic hatch) you have to be able to spend close to 25% of the price of your car to be competitive.

Or at least that's how it looks from here. The idea of doing something different is shit on and the sport is getting to the point where it's prohibitively expensive. Unless I take all the stuff off my car and run it in stock class road tire.

This is why i don't bother with amateur level racing, I go to track days and get my go fast kicks but actually competing is too expensive, takes away the fun aspect because instead of having a good time youre constantly critiquing what you could do better. I used to do Suzuki contingency racing back in 2000-2002 on GSX-R 750's...you think replacing tires every race is bad, try replacing, pads, tires, brake fluid, and chains on a per race basis to have any hope. It cost me on average $700-$800 a race, and that was at the stockest of stock contingency races...not to mention I totaled 3 bikes during all that.

Racing and competing is only truly worth it for people with disposable income and those who have sponsorships. It's fun to do it to say you've done it but I've seen people get burnt out really quick. Not to mention what it does to your toys you drive/ride. I'll come out and play on an AutoX track but i won't compete unless it's just friendly like out at LM. SCCA is a great organization but if you are truly serious about competing you better have the pocket book ready to pick up the tab.

Maybe it's just me but the scca event I have went to did not seem all that competitive unless you made it that way. No one mentioned a thing about my mods to the car or the time I got besides the guy at tech to put me in the proper class.

I know I probably sound like I'm just whining, and I suppose, at a level, I am; but this has annoyed me about the SCCA, the constantly changing rules to "balance" the sport and make it more "accessible", the huge gaps between certain classes, and the seemingly inconsequential mods that bump you into a totally different class. THe biggest thing that has been bothering me lately is the start up cost, unless you stay in stock class, and this car is really hard to leave that alone to that level of anal-retentiveness.

I like the idea of SCCA solo competition, I like the concept of a parking lot race track, and I love being able to do shenanigans in my car on a closed course where some of that madness is encouraged (and not illegal), but I don't like having to balance what I feel the car needs to handle and perform better against what is legal in a given class, and if I do a certain mod I feel the car needs to fix a specific problem, I'm suddenly stuck in a class I'm grossly under funded to even bother competing in.

I guess I'll just stick to the LM open house shenanigans and enjoy that once a month, instead of paying the SCCA to class me somewhere I don't have the funding to compete in.
/rant.

Me and you have a different out look at autocross for me it is just for fun and the only person I'm really competing with is myself I get excited when I do better than someone I thought would beat me but really I'm just there to have a good time and if I'm the slowest on the course oh well I had fun. There is always someone with deeper pockets and more skills if I went out there looking to be number one every time I would just be wasting my money on the entry fee.

I'm a naturally competitive person, always have been, so shutting down that part of me, especially during anything called a "race" is nigh on impossible.

I understand I am very competitive in some things but not so much in others. I don't have the time to make my car an auto cross car and I'm not nearly good enough at it to be all that competitive for me it is more of a fun hobby than a serious competition.

Hey y'all!

Really interesting topic with the whole "class" conversation. It's easy to look at the whole thing both ways: All those numerous classes were put in place to actually protect people against the "feature creep" of competitive cars, meaning, people will just keep making their cars faster as they can afford leaving others in the dust unless restricted or categorized. On the other hand, class division lines have to be drawn somewhere, and it won't always work out the best for every person or their driving style; there really are no "correct" class divisions. Not to mention, having classes and lines that you have to tune to can sometimes mean even more money is spent trying to get as close as possible to that line. Sort of like: Knife-edging, blueprinting, and balancing everything is more expensive than bolting on a Greddy Turbo kit.

Another thought: What are you interested in, and what are the extremes? If you are one of those people that wants it to be all about driving skill, then you don't need classes, you just all need to be driving the same EXACT car and each have your own set of expendables like wheels and brakes and such. If you don't need that assurance, then you just accept the fact that you might take your Duster onto a track with a fully blown Z and you're just going to have to read success into how few times you get lapped, or that doing the course in twice-as-long is actually o.k.

It occurs to me that one great equalizer that could play a part in some series would be more randomness. Like tires that are good on the track will be a bad day on dirt roads. Or similarly, some of the Miata guys that showed up at the autoX had to dial their boost down a bit to do our course because it was so tight.

Then again, that would occasionally make the differences even larger between competitors as much as it would equalize them. Not to mention, having dynamic parts like shocks you can tune to different situations would continue to encourage larger and larger spends.

Oh well!

I have always had fun working on and driving my cars I don't want it to turn into a something I have to do or look at driving it as a loss because I'm not as good as someone else if the fun goes away I will have lost a boat load of money and time. My advice if your not having fun doing it than don't waste the time and money. So I don't worry about class and rankings I'm just there to ruin my tires and make my face hurt from smiling to much.
