Two different tastes and needs. I have now owned both. Honestly I was not getting the performance out of the FR-S by driving it daily on the street. Had UBER amounts of fun with it on the road course though.

I enjoy the VT as a daily for all of its amenities alone over the FR-S.

My first car at 19 was '89 Civic Si which back then had only 108hp and something like 98lb/ft of torque. That car was hella fun without getting me into trouble. Think along those lines in a small light low hp car. You'll appreciate a sports car much more once you master the basics in subcompact/compact, and you'll be having fun along the way. Plus like someone said, the insurance on either of those cars at your age will be brutal due to lack of years of driving experience.
Hmm....lots of assumptions in the responses so far. My first car was a Mustang GT. V8, RWD, manual transmission, and plenty of potential for fun (and trouble). Purchased it brand new at the age of 18, without any help from my parents. Got my own loan and my own insurance.

Did I enjoy it? You better believe it. Was it too much car for me back then? Probably, but I respected the car from day one, knowing that it was far too easy to put in a ditch or worse yet into a tree. I have no regrets buying that car and other than a couple of speeding tickets with it, no problems at all.

The reason is simple. Launching! To find out how quick both cars are in daily driving look at C&D 5-60 times.

Car and Driver says 8 seconds 5-60 for the BRZ.

That's not the Veloster Turbo though. The 9.5 second 5-60 time should be a quite a bit quicker for the Turbo version.

It should be somewhere around 7.5 for the VT. Also, the auto has the best time in the 1/4 mile right now at 15 flat. Supposedly the guy did not launch it hard either. I have not had a chance to take mine to the track yet.

Manual will run somewhere around 14.8 probably.

Don't know where you live, but around here an 18 year old male, with a brand new V8 muscle car such as a Mustang GT will pay at LEAST $4000/yr for insurance, and that's being conservative. Pretty sure it would be easily north of that. Insurance rates around here, especially for males under 25 is ridiculously expensive, and why you see most of this demographic either scamming/lying (ie: its the parents car ) to drive a sports car, or driving more basic cars until they break through the 25 barrier.

The veloster Turbo and the FR-S were really my two options when I bought. In the end, I guess the decision was made by Hyundai because they couldn't deliver the things to their dealers... but I would have chosen the FR-S anyway.

The Veloster is a nice place to sit and has plenty of features. I don't know if I'm just too old, but the thing has too many buttons and screens. The steering wheel looks more like a game controller than a simple turning control.

I had my reservations about the Veloster's suspension, but figured I could make it up with aftermarket parts. The aftermarket is incredibly light for the Veloster. Unless you're shopping for a strut tower brace, your options are incredibly limited.

Since it was obvious that I wasn't going to be able to get the suspension much better than stock, I decided to leave it. Stock suspension is competent, but certainly doesn't ask to be pushed any harder. Combine that with the Veloster's relatively tall height and all the weight of the glass roof up high and it really doesn't feel very dynamic.

Keep in mind that I was 18 years old about 20 years ago. Back then, I think I was paying like $1200/year for full coverage on my Mustang GT with a $500 deductible. It wasn't exactly cheap, but it was relatively affordable.

I'm 18 too and thats why I got a Fiat instead of the fr-s. I dont even wanna know how much I would be spending on insurance on the scion. but to compare, my insurance is 150 a month for full coverage with roadside assistance in the Fiat.
