Hmmm @Calum I noticed that the knocking sound disappears immediately when the coolant temperature hits about 70C or so. So it's not an oil thing. Is this piston slap? How bad is that for the engine?

Today is the last day of break... I have a flight tomorrow at 6AM to ORD, then a bus at 9AM to Champaign. I'll get there at 12 and I have a class at 1.

There will be classes skipped tomorrow...

It's about the size of a large mixing bowl used e.g. for cake batter or cookie dough or for whipping up egg whites for a meringue. But I still don't know what the sticks are lol

It could be, I'd have to hear it. If its going away once you get to operating temp I'd be less worried about it then if it stayed. Piston slap isn't the end of the world, of course it will wear the side walls faster, but many engines have piston slap and still live long healthy lives. My neon is about 250,000 kms old and they are famous for piston slap. It still runs fine, and gets about 30 mpg in mixed driving.
