I doubt I ever own an American car that I will CARE about. I have yet to own a domestic vehicle; however, the one Volvo I owned (that came from the Ford era) was a horrible car. Engine was the only high point.

I would if it were Exactly the same (probably), but considering it was Toyota heritage I don't think it's even worth the hypothetical

This exactly.

There is almost no Toyota heritage in this car. It might be based off the 86, but it's implementation is very little Toyota.

It's called the mustang. Cheapish, RWD, sports car that seats 4 or 5. Isn't this why the Mustang vs 86 is a constant debate?

It isn't a question of where either car is built, it is the philosophy behind each company that makes the car what it is.

Ford: Focused on comfort, highway driving and cruising.

Toyota/subaru: focused on precision, control and feedback.

No kidding. It's a 2+2, four-cylinder FR-layout sporty car built to a similar price point. That's all it has in common with with the 86.

If GM hired Subaru to build a two-seat sports car in the $65K range, and they build a front-engine, rear-drive car powered by a flat-8....would it be a Corvette?

Then what is it? Inspired from the 86, 2000GT and B200 (I think that's the one with the boxer), designed by Toyota built at Subaru with Subaru parts. But it wouldn't have happened without Toyota. What American car would it based based on for the low power fun factor?

Nothing American comes to mind. I'm just saying that the vehicle while yes, inspired by the 86 is very little Toyota at the end of the day.

In general I prefer American cars, but I don't let that deter me if an American auto company doesn't make the kind of car I'm looking to purchase. For example, I typically prefer smaller, lightweight good-handling cars, and since those tend be to be rare from American companies, I'll look elsewhere, like when I bought my Miata and Mini Cooper (and BRZ). Our current fleet consists of two American cars, one English car, and three Japanese cars.

Interesting question, my answer would be no. Why? Because america dont make flat engines which means a higher COG and just a copycat of the original ae86(no real soul) and most likely wont look as good.

Most of the cars I see that are build in America usually runs into problems. Just look at the Acura ILX and tell me how many recalls they have now because of 'gaijin' who cant build the doors right.

What if it was built in America by Americans and owned by an American company with no Japanese affiliation but everything, quality, performance was the same as in no bad manufacturing etc all the same. Oh of course badging and name brz/frs would be called something else. Would it sway anyone if the car was exactly the same but badged differently?

No...German or Japanese built only.US automakers are so out of touch with their drivers. If one of the big 3 were to build the BRZ,they would have totally short changed it.probably thrown a solid rear axle in it and dropped the compression to 10-1.With the exception of the Z06 vette,I am saddened with what the US has to offer.

I'm not trying to get one over on you.
I was simply pointing out that your country did build a boxer engine because I thought it was interesting.

If it were the exact same car, quality, power, handling, e.t.c., then brand name wouldn't matter to me.
