So is it safe to say that ECU 812 is the true fix?? Any easy way to see what ECU you have other than looking right at it? (ie is there a code listed on the delivery papers? My BRZ is coming in this week!!)

Not safe to say so yet... Give it a couple of months and if no problems arise from the 812; then we can still only assume it's the true fix...

At least Subaru/Toyota are aware of this issue and are looking into it though...

Also, you wouldn't be able to tell which ECU model you have unless you look under the dash for the serial number.

UPDATE: So After having my ECM replaced, it has been running great. I've driven for about 600 miles so far and it has had a strong idle with no weird dips. I even took it to an auto cross type event where it has had no issues. I would safely assume that this is the "true" fix. I hope this helps those of you waiting, this fix has truly made me forget the "down" time and have been enjoying the car.

If it is the true fix then why the hell is Toyota still replacing VVTi gears here in Sweden?

Lack of communication... Uninformed...

Also, results could be from case-to-case, some issues lead to more major problems than others... Some is just an easy fix with the replacement of the new ECU; some has blown engines...

Not only in Sweden, in France too. I got a call from the dealer with a scheduled date to replace the VVTi gears in two weeks (they already had received the parts when he was calling me, what's up with that?)

They specifically said that there would be NO firmware update or ECM swap in France this year, because it is only a temporary fix for a hardware problem. He did tell me that they where getting specially checked new parts, I guess ones made to the correct specs ?

Also, I'm not sure about it, but when I asked him why the hell other EU countries got a new firmware (like the UK) and not us, and joked about his face when he'd have to call me back to tell me that there was indeed an ECM recall campaign, he laughed and kind of hinted that there was going to be a new ECM firmware early next year anyway for unrelated things. That would explain why they would not bother going though a certification process in November if they were already going to certify a new one in a few month ?

Maybe the guy misunderstood something, maybe he is BSing me, or maybe that is all a global conspiracy, who knows? Tune in for the next episode in two weeks where some noob guy takes apart my engine and tries to put it back in one day !

Received my car back 11/9. My invoice says that a field service engineer came to inspect the vehicle and they replaced the ecm with updated program/software. No details as to what the updates were, but probably the updated ecm that everyone is talking about. This is my third and hopefully final ecm.

My car was stuggling with the idle issue and I changed my fuel to gasoline without ethanol to get rid of the cricket sound it was making, the idle issue went away also.

Too early to tell, but I've logged 1000 miles since getting re-flashed and have had no CELs since then.

From what I understand from my dealer, standard procedure is to check the performance of the VVTi unit. If it is functioning properly, then all that is needed is an ECU flash (or replacement). But if VVTi is not functioning properly, it needs to be replaced along with the ECU update.

Got my car back yesterday with its new ECM (aka ECU). Looks like I got the 22765AC812 ECM version. I believe my original ECM was the 810 version.

Took it over the local mountain pass and it seems to be working great. Will keep my fingers crossed that the CEL/SL doesn't come back.
Please keep us updated if the CEL/SL ever comes back on with that new 812 model ECU! (Knock on wood it doesn't...) :happy0180:

My next question is going to be can they just pull one out of a car sitting on the lot? My thought is its probably bad too and they are knowingly going to sell it like that. I think we will find out this is much closer to a 100% fail rate that first believed. I do R&D for a major OEM and this kind of failure either is or isnt - ECUs are built to very rigourous standards and never fail unless abused.
