I once had a 94 celica with aftermarket wheels with heavy vibration at highway speed. It was going on and off and would start / stop when hitting certain bumps.
They were properly torqued/balanced, and hubcentric rings were the only thing that fixed the problem. However that's the only car I ever owned that really "needed" these rings to fix an issue. |

Question guys-
I put some hubcentric rings on my BRZ - however since the rings have the small lip on them, when the wheels are mounted, there is now a slight gap (maybe 1mm) between the wheel and the hub. Is this okay? I don't see any way around this since most of these rings have the lip on them. |

If I bought steelies from TireRack would hub rings still be required? I'm picking up some used TR steelies with snow tires today from a 2010 WRX. Forgive my ignorance.

Hubcentric rings have two dimensions: inside diameter and outside diameter. The inside diameter has to be correct for the hub and the outside correct for the particular wheel. I think if you had to force(hammer) fit rings in the wheel they may not have been the correct OD.
Having measured my hubs and OE wheels, I got these results: Hub centre bore outside diameter actually measured at about 55.98mm, stock wheel inside bore diameter at 56.2mm. Based on this, and other references the standard wheel bore size appears to be listed as 56.1mm. If you are forcing a large circle into a small bore on the wheel you also run the risk of reducing the ID of the ring as well, so it may not fit the hub?? So hubcentric rings need to be properly sized for both the wheel and the hub. The rings allow alloy wheels to be made in one size but can also fit many hub sizes with the correct rings. Steel wheels tend not to use rings as they appear to not have space for them. The steel wheels that close but not hubcentric appear to be about 57.1mm. You would need to have a hubcentric ring with a radial thickess of 0.5mm which would probably be way to delicate no matter the material? There is lots of discussion on steel wheels in the threads on snow tires, and particularly in the CANADA subforum. |

I have a bunch of Volk/RAYS 65mm to 56.1mm hub rings if anyone needs them... ![]() Btw, when I use plastic hub rings, I always put some electrial tape on the inside of the ring and then install them on the car first. This makes them fit tighter and sometimes fills the gap if the hub ring is not 100% accurate in size. |
