I'm another one for Second Skin Products... Ant is a brilliant guy and can explain how and why his products work to a very fine degree. I've also dealt with Rick at RammAudio and he is also very knowledgeable and has a good website with a lot of explanation. I use Second Skin because they had a very broad range of products that offer a complete solution.
Fatmat ripped me off for a $50 order a few years ago, so I'd hardly recommend them.

1) Looks like that Amazon link is dead. 2) The audio on the website really needs a mute button. I gave up navigating the site because the music intro would kick in on every new page (no good when I'm browsing at work!).

I gave them a ring last night. I didn't have a whole lot of questions, made it known that I'm a neophyte when it comes to sound deadening, and he only asked for my name, phone number, and address to ship the sample to. No pressuring to buy more product, which I highly respect.
It went so smoothly and felt so low-key that it almost seemed like it was someone I knew who was just hooking me up with some extra product. |

I'm another for second skin, first time using. Bought the Damplifier Pro that's 20 sq, and wow did it make a difference in the trunk. Not only is it thicker then dynamat but I like how the foil is black instead of silver. I would recommended it

Most of what people think of when you talk about deadener is a mass-loaded deadener like traditional dynamat. Several posts have mentioned ensolite, which is a closed cell faom (ccf) that absorbes sound waves as opposed to the mass loaded products, which prevent vibrations by increasing mass, thus increasing the anount of energy needed to cause vibrations and changing the resonant frequency.
All that said, if you want a cheap CCF product to augment mass loading, check out Frost King Duct Insulation at lowes/HD. $20 will do both doors. |

Mass is a bad word in performance terms. Mass Loaders are 70's and were typically asphalt based roofing panels which were layered against the metal panels to add mass. These are heavy, smelly and very susceptible to heat changes, especially in the southern climes.
Modern sound deadeners like Second Skin's Damplifier, or Dynamat Pro are known as CLD (Constraint Layer Vibration Damper) which use butyl rubber backed by foil to convert vibration into heat. The modern dampers can be just placed in the resonant problem areas and can accomplish the same amount of sound deadening by targeting the resonance in the panel, while only adding a fraction of the weight. Many people treat it like a mass loader when they install it and go for full coverage, but that's overkill, it's possible to just use small strips in strategic locations to achieve the same effect. Yes, mass loaders are cheap, but at the cost of weight, so unless you want to give up your performance, spend the money to do it right with a CLD type damper. Light weight is the key to this car, but it doesn't mean that we have to sacrifice that for a good sounding car.
