I've heard arguments that FF/AWD is not drifting. So... Why is FF and AWD not considered drifting?
Wikipedia Definition: Drifting - a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa). [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOASjjpRnXk"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOASjjpRnXk[/ame] FF Civic [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HiTVo75LUM"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HiTVo75LUM[/ame] AWD Ford Fiesta Both these footages meet the criteria of the definition. It also said nothing about drifting being solely for RWD. So Why?

Elitism and convention. It's considered more proper and traditional to drift with RWD, but rally racing for example relies heavily on AWD drifting (or powersliding, etc, whatever name you want to slap on it).
FWD drifting IMO is sort of a "me too" thing, or a "Everyone said it was impossible, so I did it" thing. Flat spotting the rear tires that bad to me is an excessive means of proving a point. Although the FWD rally groups rely heavily on using the handbrake to rotate the car, I don't know if using the hand brake to rotate the car for gravel hairpin falls under the "drifting" context... FWD platforms were designed for manufacturing simplicity and cost, not performance, but that doesn't mean we won't find a way to wrench every possible ounce from it. |

You're prpbably seeing the effect of an antilag kit used on rally cars and some race cars that see lots of on/off throttle. It's a system that ignites additional fuel in the exhaust tract to maintain the turbo spool. From what I understand they are very hard on turbos and exhaust systems, but its ok because racecar.

The reason why FF isn't considered drifting is in the 1st post. Slip angle is the angle of a rolling tire direction of travel vs cars direction of travel
A ff needs to use the handbrake to initiate this or liftoff oversteer, and as such it cannot easily maintain it. 4wheel drifting is a freaking artform and is amazing. It's harder to maintain a direction of drift while the front wheels are tryin to pull you back and are doing the same speed as rear wheels
