I say get the FR-S.
Personally if I had the option to either: A) Cut my balls off with a rusty spork or B) Buy a veloster I would pick A 100 times out of 100. |

I would say get what you want,OP. Test drive both. I test drove an Fr-s and fell in love with everything except sound quality lol. I am 18 myself and my parents financed it and I pay them every month. I would have done it myself, but being 18 I have no credit.. Also, I understand everyone's point about the inexperience, and you guys are right. BUT some of us are not bad drivers. We will learn. I used to drive a g37s before this and that was ALOT more scary than an fr-s...so much more power..anyways, Iwon't be speeding, especially not until the 1k break-in at 4rpm. I know how to take care of the car. BELIEVE IN YOUTH haha

Not sure why there was so much negativity to the FRS as a first car.
Right now the majority of the current generation of kids think of cars as nothing more than A-B. There is no passion for cars, no posters of their dream car over the bed. How are we supposed to build a future generation on car fanatics if we stick them in crap cars? If you raise your child well, around a culture of cars and responsible performance driving I see no problem with giving them a nice car. It's not like his dad is throwing him the keys to an R35 GTR, which a friend of mine saw pulling into a HS parking lot the other day. This was close to the poster I had:

I really like the turbo veloster look. Has a ton of options. Just liked the fr-s better than it and vs mustang, vs GTi and others. Speed, man people are silly, this car would beat half the 80's so called hot rods. It is plenty fast enough and you can run it hard and fun. I did see a black one on road, looks great. I have only 1000 miles on my fr-s, but every mile is thrilling even with wife in car saying slow down, despite me pointing out other cars are passing us. The negative on veloster was the torque steer for sure.

No comparison. BRZ/FR-S > Veloster Turbo

I feel like the Veloster is like a luxury car, turbo or not. My friends sister just got one and it feels like sitting in a hybrid.
Test drive it and see what you like more. The FR-S was my first car and sometimes i wish i got a cheap little Honda for a while. But thats just me. |

both cars are not good for first car. everyone scerws up their first car and your insurance will sky rock high. however, if you and your parents have deep pocket, or you rather devote your life to work to support the car i would take FRS over veloster for reliability (NA> FI) and fun to drive (RWD >FWD). however veloster is FWD and will be more forgiving and probably safer than frs.

Ok since the "You're only 18" argument has been beat to death, here's my thoughts.
The BRZ/FRS looks incredible. The Veloster also is not bad. Insurance on the Veloster should be cheaper because of the 3rd door and hatch back. Straight line performance should be similar. Cornering would be better in the BRZ for an experienced driver, but the FWD will probably be safer at the limits. This is why insurance companies like FWD cars. They tend to understeer vs oversteer in RWD cars. Economy and maintenance issues should be minimal, though based on previous ownership of a Subaru I would opt for the Toyota FRS over the BRZ. I've never dealt with Hyundai for dealership stuff, but a friend of mine has been pretty impressed with their service even on his late model Tibouron. |

O wow your parents must be rich. I would get the FRS-expect to fuck it up a few times and be careful with turns until you get use to it on the road.
Enjoy it-after all you don't have to pay for it. My parents got me my grand prix-and well, as a first car I learned how to drive in it. Made mistakes but learned from them. My friends on the other hand crashed their first cars-thankfully their parents didn't mind buying them newer ones lol. My advice: don't mod it too much because once you crash it and it's gone you basically wasted your time. |
