Grinding / Shaking under emergency braking

So on Sunday, I was nearly hit by someone who just randomly decided to merge into my lane, but I wasn't hit due to judicious application of the brakes. However during said braking, the pedal starting severely shaking and I hear what I can only describe as grinding.

Under normal braking, I have never heard anything like this (~6300 miles). I was able to replicate this today buy accelerating to ~20mph in a parking lot then immediately applying the brakes hard.

Is this the ABS/booster system kicking in.. or something else?

I'm hoping that's true, but the ABS on my MR2-Spyder wasn't nearly this aggressive/loud.

Just ABS getting rowdy. Some cars aren't as violent about it as this one.

ABS, sounds normal. Likely had some stability control, ABS based, also being applied. These systems pump very fast now compared to older systems for better control and less locking of the brakes. I havent had mine come on yet except for stability control, and its loud.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj7WIlliwgQ"]Subaru BRZ drift secrets, stability control, VSC and TRC settings - YouTube[/ame] good video and you can hear the system going nuts.

Definitely sounds like ABS. The ABS pump makes a grinding sound as it cycles on and off dozens of times per second. I've driven many cars with ABS, some were smoother, but you can still hear and feel the ABS when it was active, especially under you foot.

yes, this is normal in vehicles with moving components like an engine, transmission and other pieces with mass that move around.

FWD drivers may tend to experience this less than awd/rwd cars.

Yes it's normal. When the engine is running it vibrates, at all RPM, but when it slows below idle the vibes become much lower frequency and more pronounced. The engine shakes a lot more because it can't balance itself well. Same thing happens when you start the engine.
