Just go to an open parking lot and play with the car with the aids off to get a feel for it. Drive in circles at a consistant pace, lift off the gas, and then put your foot down on the gas to break it free. Apply opposite lock to attempt to control it. Rinse and repeat.

Yea I took the FR-S out for the first time to a parking lot a few weeks ago. There is so much control with this car its all about the throttle input. Doesn't take much to keep it in a perfect circle.

This car doesn't have enough power to have a little powerslide fun on the street safely, in my opinion... For example: In a car with more power, you could just modulate the throttle to get the tail out at low speeds... Hell, you could get the tail out in a 2010 Camaro SS just by stepping on it in almost any gear at nearly any section of the corner.
In this car, you have to be more aggressive and precise, because you have to enter the corner in the right gear with a good line at the tires' grip limit, then gently flick the tail out while carefully modulating throttle, line and speed. In other words, it's harder to reach the grip limit of tires by going fast than it is to simply step on the gas and let the differential push the rear around... Of course, rain makes every car feel like a 500+ hp beast. haha

So let me get this straight
You don’t know anything about performance driving. You tuned of all the safety aides. And the FR-S scared you. Go to an Auto-X or HST day and learn what you are doing. The FR-S is about as dangerous as a playful puppy it can bite if it get over existed or mixed messages from its owner but is generally very safe for an animal with big sharp teeth. This is a list of cars you should never even think of getting in because they are F…ing AXE murders actively trying to kill you if you make a mistake. (Feel free to add to the list this is just the ones that have scared me) 930 turbo Porsche 911 from late 80s APU MKIV Supra. 427 cobra V8 focus Dinan M Roadster |

One man's trash is another man's treasure. It's winter here and my FR-S practically crab-walked me to work. SO amazing.

Lol seriously, not enough power. I've seen people doing crazy stuff with low powered bmw's, ford sierra etc. I'm not saying streetdrifting is ok but the fr-s has enough punch for drifting.

It does have enough punch, but it's not enough to drift at lower speeds, unless it's a tight circle in first gear, if that makes sense.

I understand where your post is coming from. That's just the nature of the beast (86). There's not a whole lot of displacement to generate the torque at low RPMs to break the rear loose at low speeds. Where as on a 6 or 8 cylinder, the torque is available at low RPM and speeds to get the rear tires to lose grip. The 86 is very mild mannered up to it's limits. All cars regardless of drivetrain will bite if you drive like an asshat. Ever see front wheel drive civics lose it with less than 130 horsepower with a dinky little D16? here you go: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTFcKLm-6mg"]civic crash - YouTube[/ame] OP, just be glad you're not driving a 90's porsche 911 with a rear engine, rearwheel drive with no traction control and lead weights in the front for balance. |

People are probably getting mixed up with powersliding and drifting. You can get any car to drift. In terms of powersliding, I think the car has just enough to get it going.

Wow, too many people to respond to, but I guess the first thing to say is I've been auto-xing for 7 years. I know a bit about enthusiatic driving. Still, it's always been in a car that I knew wouldn't bite me, at least not like the FR-S.
It's my first RWD, and in total honesty, for the type of driver I am, it's the wrong car. I love it, it's just going to be a hefty learning curve. Likely one that I'll never complete. |

Wow. What an over-reaction. Shit, just go out and spend a few hundred dollars on some better tires. I've driven my GTO on the stock tires (which are absolute shit once the temp drops below freezing) through a Michigan weather...that was a nightmare. I learned my lesson too...I invested in snow tires.

But the biting part sure gets your adrenaline flowing. I remember when i tried to clutchkick for the first time. My hart was pounding, sweaty palms but it was so awesome. I'm going to use the winter to prepare my car for 2013. i'm planning to do some driver courses to better my skills.

Looks like that Civic driver(in the video) thought he was playing Need For Speed. Have you ever played that game? You crash a lot! ha ha
