Final Update on Silver FR-S 6MT: Original dealer bought me out of the car. Refunded my deposit, payment and tag fee. Loan will be refunded. Signed a few documents. Problem solved for me.
Still enjoying my Rally Blue BRZ Limited 6MT.

Mean 1440mi
STD 1500mi

So as 86BRZ mentioned you need to pass ~3000mi before you can start to think that your engine is safe.

Note however that 24% of the reported CEL issues occurred within the first 250 miles.

I think this further illustrates this is not a software but a hardware problem. Software issues dont vary, its on or off.

So if that's true then the manufacturers are trying to solve a hardware problem with a software solution.

Great. Two weeks after they cleared my first CEL, tonight I got CEL + TC and limp mode without much warning (no extreme shaking like I had last time)

I was going to the dealership tomorrow anyway to check for the fuel pump/chirp noise problem anyway...

Oh and as of last Friday, my dealership still did not hear anything from Toyota France about the CEL/idle issue, appart from that they never heard of it and that i must be an isolated issue. *sigh*

I sent all the links to this page and other forums/TSBs/announcements to the tech guy I'm talking to at the dealership, and he is as dumbfounded as me as for what to do. Looks to me that they are also kept in the dark.

I don't know how some of you manage this. This would be unheard of here in Canada, a dealer buying back a car...

Yes it's a hardware problem. The tolerances in the engine are off and the original ECU programming wasn't able to compensate. Even Toyota and Subaru have admitted this in their press clippings, but they obviously play down the seriousness of the issue.

I'm at 5400kms which is 3350 miles. I had idle dip from day 1 (May 31), a few near stalls in june, a stall in July, crappy running in august and a CEL in late septemer or early october at 4700kms when the engine really acted up. The ECU was replaced and the engine runs better, but continues to have idle dip (with engine shudder) and intermittent half-second throttle loss at low rpm during initial acceleration. I feel my car has never been %100, it's not %100 now, but the dealership and Toyota consider it fixed. This is as good as it gets unfortunately.

Not sure about Canada, but Lemon Laws here in the states would have forced Toyota to take the car back and pay expenses. Having said that, the Dealer didn't have to buy the car back. They could have made me go through the process, which would have taken longer. I respect them for doing that. Now, they should have done that when my 3 day old car was in need of parts that were three weeks away and I would have bought another FR-S. Worked out in the end, I got the BRZ Limited I really wanted.

Back from the dealership, they cleared my second CEL.

The guy there did receive news from Toyota France: according to them, the ECM re flash *does not* solve the problem and is only there to temporize and give them time, because they say they need to replace some parts in the engine to really fix the problem. This is the opposite of what Toyota says in other countries...

Bear in mind that the same guy is also telling me that there is NO problem at all with the fuel pump (engine chirp) even in front of another GT86 that does the same noise. His argument is that you can't look at what is going on in the other countries because "they are not the same parts and not the same cars". I can understand that there are differences in the ECM software due to local legislation, but come on... Anyway, I don't know who to believe anymore.

My guess is that there are varying degrees of deficiencies in the engine parts. Small ones will be "fixed" by the re-flash (or that they will fail again in a few years when you are out of warranty), large ones will need to be changed with better parts.

This is starting to make me mad. Not at the car itself (every new piece of tech has issues), but at the way this situation is handled by Toyota in the different countries, and the typical dealership behavior of denying everything even with factual data in their face...

Your dealer sucks big time.....

What i got today from my source from Subaru dealer tech guys - is that USA still do not have 'new' reflash and that it will be getting it later on the run this month. Europe - will get new one on Nov. 5...

Also - ECU setup / software is different for USA / JP / EU markets.. All of them have different setups.
