I've never done an autocross or any type of racing. I started doing some reseach on what I need to do before I can compete, but I am so confused.

I would like to do the Houston Region SCCA - Sat, Nov 3, 2012 Autocross/Solo II. Do I just need to register? If so, what class do I enter for a stock FR-S?

Again I've never done this before and I would appreciate any advise from you guys.

Honestly, get used to your car and get more money. I obviously don't know how well off you are and it's none of my business really, but Tracking isn't a cheap hobby. You need tow hooks, wheels, helmets, to take classes, and more. Also, you'd spend even more money on mods that you wouldn't really care for initially like sway bars or something!

Wait am I missing something? I don't think we're talking about an all out road course.

With the helmet I found on Craigslist, I think I spent 105 that weekend.

Last SCCA event I was a rookie. Here are my third and fourth runs:

Upcoming SCCA event:

They've already started a thread: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19575

Yes it can cost a lot if you want to go all out, but yes you can go there with a stock vehicle and absolutely no knowledge. I was alone for the most part. My friend came later, but he had never done it either. I'm thinking about going this time as well. That means I'd have to miss Cars and Coffee though.

They have loaner helmets, I didn't need tow hooks, another set of tires or anything. 1 working vehicle, 1 driver, and some cash. Don't be discouraged! C stock or "CS" is what I'd run it in. I kind of made the mistake of running in the Rookie class when there were some rookies with powerful vehicles.

If you've not done any type of competitive events before, register in the "Rookie Class"...makes it pretty easy.

It's been years since I've autocrossed, but I may want to run a few events while waiting for the 2013 summer track season...

Best bang for the buck in autocrossing is the Novice or Rookie schools which are usually in the spring or summer... You get way more runs compared to the 4 at a normal event plus coaching. Evolution Schools are the next step up, but those are more for the competitive autocrosser, held very infrequently, and the price is in line with HPDE track events ($200+). You will learn a lot at and Evolution School though and it is worth the money for more personalized instruction.

Doesn't matter what vehicle you have when first starting out, the driver is more important than the vehicle. Case in point I autocrossed my Toyota Tacoma and came in roughly midpack regularly out of all the entrants (some 200-300 entrants back then), being quicker than a few Corvettes, S2000's, WRX's, BMW M3's, etc in my stock height Tacoma. Had the quickest truck at the events, I thought a few of the Ford Lightnings would give me a run for the money, but they were about 3 seconds slower... There was another Tacoma that was a single cab (lighter with much shorter wheelbase), lowered suspension, and more power - but he was still slower on course. I was fighting for 1st place in STF class with a buddy in a civic hatchback for a little while.
