i love my mk2 turbo but the mk's 1 and 3 are much better drivers cars, partly due to weighing about 500-600lbs more

i think the MKI and MKIII are generally easier to drive, but the MKII is a very good driver's car as well. i haven't spent much time autocrossing or tracking anything but a MKII, but it is extremely rewarding.

I just bought my 2nd gen almost complete long block a couple months ago. All i need is a LSD tranny, axles and a side mount and thats about it. I plan on upgrading alot though before i put the motor in. Hows the increase in displacement? I havent decided if i want to go the same route or stay 2.0L. The extra low end would be nice but i dont want to sacrafice any RPMs. Is your redline the same as stock or lower? Thanks |

i would recommend staying 2.0L. get some .020" (86.5mm) pistons, either 8.5:1 or 9:1 compression ratio, a nice 1.0-1.4mm multi-layer steel head gasket, and call it a day. i love my high compression and off-boost response, but it's a PAIN to tune with my worse-than-stock rod:stroke ratio, coupled with my 9.3:1 compression ratio (9:1 pistons and .8mm head gasket).
my redline is 7800rpm, mostly for autox, so i don't run out of gear as often, haha. if you have any questions, i'd be more than happy to answer anything i can! ![]() -Mike

AHHH the decisions!
What i think i "should" do is just keep this motor relatively stock. maybe a nice bore like you said of 20 over. and some decent cams, shimless buckets, 18ish PSI and call it a day for a daily driver for now. I figure i can get away with a piggyback with these mods. I would think 260ish WHP would be plenty fun for DD and occasional drift/drag/track. Then once i get a FT86 as a DD, 98+ 5S block 2.3L 25-30 PSI E85 track monster

I´ve never been driven to a mk I or MK III, but I think because of the lightweight they are really quick!
I use to drive a USdm MKII NA for 5 years, only use for touge and daily drive - the 5S-FE power is OK, but definitly not for drag (honestly this engine is not engineerd for drag neither everyone i faster in the straight lane is faster then you but that´s not the point). The engine power is enough for daily drive. I drove a lot of "GERMAN ENGINEERING" and other european cars but in contrast the MR2 is whole another driveable car which I am prefer, love and never would change!3 months ago, I got my 1st snap oversteering, to quick on wet roads , damn f*'&, but I was very lucky with it - nothing wrecked ![]() now I am thinking about swapping to 3.0l V6 or 2.0 turbo GENIII but I think the turbo is too freaky!Did I mention, my English is not the best? Sorry for that ![]() So what can I say? I am a MR2 addict and yes I am in MR2OC... .com and co.uk... and I think there is much work for the FT-86 to do, to get me that satisfaction of driving even there are about 20 year difference in years... CHEERIO! Last edited by Abflug; 03-20-2010 at 07:34 AM. |
