I have a couple of coworkers with aspergers. Very talented when they find the right niche. Many people have trouble working with them, but taking the time to understand their condition helps a lot.

I have a hard enough time dealing with dyslexia (iPad just had to correct the spelling) I can't imagine how rough aspergers is.

It amazes me how prevalent it's becoming that people are diagnosed as being somewhere on the autistic scale. My nephew is awaiting diagnosis but all the professionals he's seen agree he's somewhere on the scale. It's good that people are getting the support they need, but I wonder if the diagnosis rate is going up, or if autism is becoming more common.

I think Autism is becoming more common. :/ Then again the rate and chances of a newborn getting this is becoming quite common now too.

A funny little piece of information, mind you it's second hand so I might be remembering this inaccurately. I live in the part of the world where autism is most common, and the going theory as to why is the radiation from Chernobyl and the way it was carried by the upper air currents. My source is my wife who found this while researching for her masters in education, specializing in children with special needs.

That said, they really have no idea what causes autism. I watched a documentary where a baby was given a very strong antiboitic due to an infection. Before this the child was developing "normally" but after starting showing signs of autism. The mother did a metric fuck load of research and was actually able to cure her child for a few months. What she found was that he was missing an enzyme or something to the effect in his digestive system. it should have developed as a baby, but didnt because of the antibiotic. She was able to replace it but as time went on the required dose was getting larger and larger to the point that his body couldn't handle it and she had to stop. The before, during, and after videos were heart wrenching, by the way.

Since then tests have been done to see if this enzyme was the root cause but it wasn't mutually exclusive to autism. I'm just wondering how long it'll be before the autism scale gets broken up into a few different conditions.

My personal opinion, based purely on unscientific observation, is its a little of both. When I think back when I was in elementary school and road the big yellow brontosaurus to class no one was tested for this, but I knew kids that probably were somewhere on the scale.

That said, based on what I've seen of my wife's case load (she is an OT in the school system where we live) the number of cases has increased over the years in the same general area/population.

It sort of reminds me of crime statistics. We keep better track these days so some of the growth is in reported crimes. For example, take murder rates. Yes its probably up, but do we really know what the murder rate was, say 120 years ago? How many people living in the Wild West just "disappeared" and no one really knows what happened?
