I'm not necessarily looking for downforce, but just to smooth the airflow under the car to reduce drag, which would increase top speed AND fuel economy.
Talking about airfoils in the aircraft context is tricky, since not all of an aircraft's lift is generated through Bernoulli's Principle.

You're right that faster (i.e. lower pressure) airflow will cause an airfoil to lift, due to the difference in pressure (low pressure fast air on top and high pressure slower air on bottom). Many cars exploit this effect in reverse, the air above the car is higher pressure and the air below is made to flow faster and thus be lower pressure. As you can imagine, the effect is also reversed, meaning that instead of lift the pressure difference will generate downforce.

On the FR-S/BRZ underbody panels won't generate lift, but they probably won't generate too much downforce either. However, they do appear to lower the coefficient of drag on the JDM version that comes with mostly complete underbody paneling from factory. (see http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=451112) This should result in increased fuel economy. This article (http://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/...l-economy.html) suggests maybe .2 mpg for that .01 improvement in Cd, even if it's more or less, that gives you an idea of the magnitude of the improvement. As far as top speed goes, using the formula of WHP = .000007*Frontal Area*Coefficient of drag*velocity^3 (see note) we find that Cd = .29 results in a theoretical top speed of 156.204mph and a Cd = .28 results in an increase to 158.042mph. With a lip spoiler and underbody panels the JDM GT-86 gets the Cd down to .27 which gives a theoretical top speed of 159.97mph. Except that it's in Japan and they use kph, so 257.4

*Note: I used the values of whp = 173 (based on Edumunds.com independent dyno run) and Frontal area = 22.36 ft^2 (spec sheet width x (height-ground clearance), which is imperfect but kinda close)

Well ill be heading to Cali this week and will be back before the weekend... My ? is, do i buy the tune and no license or what? John's thread on the Visconi Tune says that you buy license and then tune and a cable is a option (correct?) if you have a buddy near by that has one which would be you from you mentioning you received yours.....

Just found out the gt86/fr-s is only one of three new sports cars in the work at Toyota one is going to be a mr2 style 2 seat convertible to compete with the mx5 and the other a v6 n/a to compete with the 370z it was on top gear in the Philippines when they interviewed a guy from Toyota

Yeah there was a thread on it the other day. Mr2 & Celica. Which is interesting as I would think the frs would replace the Celica and be the middle of the Mr2 and the supra that has been rumored.

Well I guess im behind the times I thought it was new they where making 3 instead if just one it sounds like over kill to me almost like they are trying to compete with Chevy or dodge for having multiple sports cars out at once

They are trying to compete with GM, Toyota and GM are number 1 & 2 in the world (depending on what day of the week it is). So anything Toyota does is to become number 1 and stay there. Besides, more sports cars means more money for Toyota and possibly more money into this economy.

I agree its going to be a good thing but I would like to see a lasting affordable sports car like the Camaro or the mustang from Toyota I think the fr-s has the potential to be around for a good long time one they get it figured out and I know the Camaro went away for a few years but the customers complained so now its back. Ford has the mustang for the average person and the gt50 for the crazy rich. Toyota could use the same formula with the fr-s and the lfa. Just my thought on it

Sucks that I made it out so late. Didn't think the errand I was running would take so long.
