I just finished my dealer's online form for this TSB. Scheduled appointment Monday. Heard it coming home from the airport yesterday evening.

It was the first time I'd been stuck in traffic since driving it...around 20 minutes of stop and go and I heard it for the first time (1200 miles).

VIN is before *9026. Hope they don't game around. I plan on discussing the Five Axis: AD kit with them if they do...shell games are second nature if you enjoy chess.

Anybody had the cricket noise go away on its own?

I definitely had it for a while and was gonna bring it up along with my oil change. I'm at about 8000 miles right now, and just recently noticed that I don't hear the cricket-chirping noise anymore.

I just hope it won't be back after the oil change though.

Some have had it go away by changing where they get their gas.

Due to weather (and not running A/C) it's quieter at idle. If I bump rpms to ~1k, it's still there, as loud as before.

Yup, before the TSBs came out I switched to ethanol-free 93 octane and still heard crickets the next day. Then I went to the dealer the next week to get the TSB done and could not reproduce the crickets. The master tech said people come in all the time with their other Subarus making similar noises and it is due to using fuel with some sort of ethanol mix.

Yea I read about the gas issue, I use the same gas every time though, either mobil or BP, premium fuel. I drive my car the same way everytime and it used to almost make the noise regardless of how I drove it as long as it was warmed up and did highway speeds. Now I don't hear it ever, so not sure what's going on? THe only thing I can think of is that the pump or something else needed to be broken in.

I have no idea where to get ethanol free gas here but try using Shell gas. I do not have the chirping sound so far on Shell.

Master Tech is "doing it wrong". It even clearly states IN the TSB the cause of the noise. Stupid stupid stupid. This isn't "other subarus". How many "other subarus" have Toyota D4S direct injection? None.

Most of us on this board know that ethanol has nothing to do with it, because we're smarter than that.

But the subbie TSB does actually say that certain formulations of gasoline may cause it...

From the TSB:
Quote:
Some may have a plunger stopper position that when combined with certain fuel temperatures or fuel formulations, may result in aeration of the fuel within the body of the pump causing this sound when the engine is idling..
