I am fine with Toyota no longer covering suspension under warranty but to cancel warranty for installing coilovers is overkill.
Crewzern, yes that would void the warranty. The only performance parts that can be fitted are the official TRD, and then too, it has to be done via a Toyota Dealer.

The WHOLE warranty?

Fortunately not that simple, although dealers seem to think so. Remember the case of the Citi golf? Owner dropped the suspension and VW cancelled the warranty. Owner took them to court and VW lost. The conclusion was that fitting lowered springs did NOT affect the rest of the car, hence only the suspension was not covered anymore. Even with other "mods" the manufacturer would have to prove that a failure happened as a direct result of the modification.

I'll see if I can find the case but it's pretty obvious - fitting springs can't cause the engine to pop or any other unrelated part to fail.

@sav You quite right, and in the coilovers case you can argue the same point. But not everyone wants to take TSA to court in order to prove their point. I guess if someone really wanted to they could but its a risk you take.

Yep, I agree but then also people don't like being bullied.

To be honest, I think any dealer would be more than reasonable when it comes to these kind of things.

I can't see them trying to cancel a warranty the moment they notice a dropped suspension, modified exhaust, etc but if there is a warranty claim it would probably be up to the factory rep to see what's what and make a decision from there. No reasonable person would refuse a claim on the engine because the engine has been dropped. That's just one example and it could get a lot more complicated of course...

I'm sure most manufacturers are in the business of retaining customers and being petty over a simple mod would do more harm than good in the long run.

I don't even think it's TSA getting uppity - the dealers are not owned by TSA and they're going on their own assumptions.

The only way would be to get in touch with somebody at head office directly. I'm still waiting for somebody to explain to me how fitting springs and shocks could affect the engine or radio in any way.

@HellBoy 86 Sure thing. I was wondering what happened to you
@sav It's actually the warranty claiming procedure of TSA. We've had many cases where we've carried the cost of a job, but the claim was rejected. If theres the slightest irregularity, they'd reject it. Sometimes we can pull some
strings, but not always.

I must get you guys the details of an 86 clutch that we had recently. Car had only about 2000 kms on the clock. But the specialist report claimed driver abuse. :what:

That is crazy, how can they claim driver abuse with 2000km on the clock?

@ZakD lmao thats rich... I used to be a trainee engineer in the Hino plant, if i spill the beans on what goes on their ul will wet urselfs.. I remember an incedent whereby the Hino 700 ( The Big Dady) has a rumbling /rattling noise coming from the gearbox, after we removed the gearbox we found the member had forgotn his hammer within the bellhousing.. so what damage was done.. who knows.. ok ok this might not apply to this situation as Japan are tides ahead of us when it comes to process of assembly bt their DPU is not 0 , and maybe that was the 1 part which failed on that 86? irrespective this car is marketed as track/everyday toy - with the ntention of it being driven hard, even if u D-Clutch while driftin, the clutch surely will last more than 2k if its a quality brand? Well that was mice 2c TSA should jus change da clutch for that bloke..

@HellBoy 86 yeah, so you know the drill. Its a fine line. But we try to help our customers out where we can. Off the topic, check this thread on another forum, where we took a guys Fortuner back after 5000 kms, and gave him a new one. He was quite impressed
