@Dimman
You say your car is noisy? Are you able to hear groaning jackhammer like noises when the engine is at low rpm? If not, I think I need to do that steam cleaning thing on my engine asap...I can't tell what that noise is, but it can't be good

I have forged pistons, 3" exhaust and an open wastegate...

Plus a piggyback that can't figure out a stable idle to save its life.

Ugh, Megasquirt3 time?

I'm just wondering whether all engines make a groan when you put a little bit of load on them at low rpm (accelerating out of first for example) and that this is the first car where I'm able to hear it because the engine is like 30 inches from my head, or if I have legit knocking problems or something like that. It's a rather loud jackhammer like noise, so I feel like it's abnormal since I've been in cars where you can hear the engine, I've been in cars where giving it gas at low rpm makes a shuddering and slight noise like this, but this noise is rather loud :/

Groan?

Video would be better to describe.

The guy I want to do the tune is a Haltech dealer, I think.

Hmmm probably. However as a pianist who's done recordings, I'm always skeptical about the effectiveness of using a crappy camera mic or something to capture sounds. Like, exhaust sound clips... no don't take a video, get a proper omnidirectional condenser or ribbon mic and record it for me.

Still better than 'groan'.

When I had a misfire issue with my 1jz car, I talked with the above-mentioned tuner over the phone and described the sound by trying to reproduce it with my mouth/tongue (sort of a farting noise) and he was instantly 'Check the coils for cracks under the rubber boot. ' Sure enough...

Point is the sound being close is far better than a written description most of the time.

For example I'm having trouble associating jackhammer with groan.

It's not the clutch chattering? Does the whole car buck a little, like just before a stall?

Keep in mind what is happening at low rpm/off idle. Air speed in is really slow so mixing sucks. At idle to compensate they throw in lots of fuel so enough evaporates to burn.

Have you tried slipping the clutch a bit more or using more rpm to see if the sound goes away?

Yea that's true. I did a little bit of rudimentary "bsfc testing" at low rpm just letting it idle in different gears, and sure enough once the load is past like 30% it runs like crap and starts guzzling fuel.

Anyways the deal is that between idle (which is not consistent, it's anywhere from 650-900 after the car is warmed up depending on what mood the ECU is in, and that ECU is damn moody!) and about 1250rpm any throttle pressure at all will induce said groaning. Up till 1500rpm there is groaning if I do more than just barely tap the throttle.

Eventually to sort out some of the tip-in, idle and part throttle issues, for sure. I think Haltech is going to be the one, though. Tuner prefers Vipec, but gets horrible pricing on them so recommends Haltech Platinum Series for bang-for-the-buck.

My other buddy is all about the MoTeC, but that would cost more than I paid for the car...

And no E85 here, so have to make do with ethanol-free 94.

Pretty smoothly runs, some vibrations in cabin. Not much performance but that's to be expected at low rpm.
