I feel for you guys having to go through all of this. Its a tremendous amount of effort and frustration dealing with a problem like this and I applaud the majority of you in this thread for excercising unwaivered patience with the dealerships and soa.

Some people have chosen to say that their representatives or dealers lied to them. This may not be the case, as typically, they legitimately do not know, or have not heard. When they say they havent heard of the problem, they may very well be telling you what they think is the truth. They are not in any way intentionally misleading you. It would make no sense to do so, it is not advantageous for any reason. Please dont use that as a reason to be angry or hate your dealer service techs. They are people too and just want to do their job and get you back on the road.
The service techs take the brunt of a lot of peoples anger and frustration, but it is not their fault. They are the unfortunate casualties being the ones that face the unhappy customers whenever there is a problem, and rarely is anyone happy when they have to bring their car in.

So I guess what im saying is, be nice to your techs, they take a lot of crap on a daily basis.

For those who are concerned about buying the car after reading this thread, please keep in mind that only people who are experiencing the issue are posting here. I believe the number one respectable member came to was 5-7% of all sold to date was affected. Don't let this thread stop you from buying the car of your dreams. It isn't a honda recall of 1million of their top selling cars.

I have a lot of respect for you guys going through this and keeping your cool, approaching it rationally and attempting to help the community to a resolution.

Almost makes me want to get a cel just to join in!

That percentage simply isn't known. I'm staying away until this problem is fixed.

If other potential buyers follow suit, I'm betting Toyota/Subaru will be that much more diligent about getting this issue resolved.

Where is the data that is based on? From what I've read it's less than 1%.

Go buy the car and stop worrying.

I do not doubt that if you had heard Welles' War of the Worlds on the radio you would have either killed yourself or been wandering around New Jersey with a gun looking for an alien to shoot.

2 funny.

UPDATE: they ordered up the camshaft speed sensor replacement, and told me to keep driving it. Once they got the part in they took the engine apart and discovered that some seals were damaged. They ordered and replaced those, and after testing, returned the vehicle to me. I didn't even get 50 miles and it started happening but was way worse than a rough idle, it was repeated misfires shaking the car apart. They had to come tow it, and then also replaced the right exhaust manifold, and also had to replace some damaged valves. They said they believe it to be fixed, but at that point I expressed that I had no confidence in the car and that I wanted a new one. It took a week for the approval from corporate but my dealership really went to bat for me and got me a new one.

So update my post to REPLACED

I’d be out hunting aliens with my M41A Pulse Rifle. They are no harder to bullseye than womp rats in my T-16 back home. You have to go out at night because that’s when they mostly come out, mostly.
Just buy the car

Hi Sean,

I'm one of the other ones who had recently pulled my order and deposit due to this issue. Sent a letter to both dealership and SOA but one came back with less than satisfying answers that prompt my decision. I simply felt that: Yes, with time these engine issues will be resolved but i didnt want to deal with all the corporate red tape and dealership's self-preserving-mandate-induced BS treatment of their customers-if I would had been affected. And 1)looking at how this issue is affecting cars across a wide range of VINs and 2) with each passing day, the list on this thread just keeps growing without resolve- I'd say that chance is pretty good.

The decision pains me greatly since I've been following the twins since they were conceived. My heart said buy and pray, my head says go with a BMW 128i

Okay so this is my first post in a forum so don't slaughter me if this is in the wrong place or i sound like an idiot... I plan on learning how to be a member of this forum especially since I'm at my wits end with this CEL issue.

I was wondering if anyone has contacted Scion or heard of any kind of compensation people with this issue are receiving?

I got real lucky with the purchase of my New/Used FR-S (or so I thought)...

An old man came into the Toyota dealer a week before me and purchased an FR-S manual, put 326 miles on it and decided he'd rather have an automatic and traded it in.

So with that being said I think I bought the first used FR-S with 300 miles on it "STOKED"!!!! I wanted to find the old man and give him a hug for taking that inital new car price drop for me.

Now to the meat and potatoes... I had the car for 4 days and put about 200 miles on it and now it's in the shop with the CEL and TC light on and for an unknown amount of time until a new computer comes in. (Thank GOD for warranties). The dealer tells me that the part is on "INTERGALACTIC BACKORDER" FML.

No estimation of when it will be fixed or even when the part will come in. They initially almost put me in a Prius rental and I said F-Off and waited for something else and they gave me a Carolla S which i thought would be better but turns out to be incredibly slow... so i returned it and they put me in a Toyota Tacoma which is sufficient but still sad... I WANT MY CAR BACK OR COMPENSATION FOR THIS INSULT.

I called Scion and opened a case but have to wait till Tuesday for my "Case Manager" to contact me... all i can do is sit and play the waiting game but want to have some amo when I speak with them as to what has been done for other people that are having this issue.

Any word or feedback would be much appreciated...

There is another thread in compensation. Some people had one or more car payments made for them as well extended warranties.

Im curious if the old guy got the cel first and they bought it back. I would see if there is a service history. If so I would be piiiisssseed.

Hi and welcome! The short answer is, yes, a number of people have contacted Scion and opened cases. There are lots of reports of their experiences in this and a couple other threads, so you can find your answers by browsing around. Good luck with your car!

Subaru/Scion PR wants you to believe it's purely software; in a way they can be right. When SW is controlling HW, there's no hard line separating which side the culprit lies. Components in the cam timing system would have to be revamped for all new parts/tolerances and would require retooling at engine assembly. Again, I believe they were aware early on ith the problematic prototypes and mitigated it from the hardware side the best they could before production rolled out. Now they leave it up to SW catch and clean up any straggling HW.
Looks like the good folks at Scion agree with you!

If I understand that correctly, the mechanical (hardware) tolerance issue varies from car to car, but there is only one software fix for all cars. How can that be a fix for all cars?

That's what I understand, too, but they seem to be saying that the software was assuming much tighter tolerances than actually exist, so when it observes values outside those assumptions it concludes that something has broken when in fact it has not.
