My dealer has been great considering my early bout of frustration. I didn't get upset or yell, but i suggested it was the ecu and showed concern for replacing parts on a brand new engine. I have since bit my lip, slapped on a smile, and just followed their process. Honestly, that's all any of us can really do.
I've worked service industry/commission jobs all my life and throwing a fit just turns the people that can help you off BIG TIME. Throw a big enough fit and they may refuse to help you at all. I know I have.
My personal issue at this point is my confidence in this particular vehicle now that parts have been swapped and the issues still persist. I love my BRZ and I don't want anything else out there. But do I want this particular one? This is where I am torn.

ECU replaced

Just had my ECU delivered and installed today. Driven 50ish miles since, everything seems great so far, hopefully it stays that way.

I checked back the list on the first post and it looks like a lot of you guys have their car been repaired already. Does it tell us that Subaru and Toyota got a good handle of the situation? Are we blowing this thing out of proportion?

It upsets me when they say these ECU are delivered on a who's been in the shop the longest but yet some of you guys spent less then a week and already got new parts and people like me that's been in going on 14 days and still have a couple weeks to go have to wait. Not trying to complain but really scion?? Feels like another lie.

If they do then they could at least tell us about it. I think the lack of communication is what we have an issue with.

(IMHO) The only important question is this:

What is the root cause?

Without the answer to that question it's very hard to say if this thing is being "blow out of proportion" as you put it because we don't know how big of a problem it is. No one knows with any certainty if a cam gear replacement and/or an ECU flash will fix a problem. There aren't any explanations as to when neither work (as is the case with several cars here). Is this problem delt with or are we the tip of the iceburg? Their ECU explanation leaves a lot on the table...

All I know is that my car has been in the shop for 26 days and Toyota refuses to flash it. I know that my dealer has sold 22 FR-S' and I'm their only customer with the problem so it doesn't appear to be widespread. I don't think they have a good handle of the situation and based on what they have said to the press and what I have read here in this thred and on many others forums all over the world. I believe Toyota/Subaru have a lot more they could be telling us that they're not.

I bet that if we analyzed who getting fixed the quickest, they're prioritizing parts to the states with the most aggressive Lemon Laws. IL has some of the most business friendly Lemon Laws in the US so these f#&kers at Toyota don't have a problem making me wait a month for parts while Consumer Reports gets their car repaired in 4 days.

Nope. Unless my car gets 400hp or a Mercedes interior by morning, I expect it to be reliable for the price I paid, so far we have an ECU tweak that is, at best, suspect.

No one is sure yet. Some of us have had hard parts replaced and haven't been told they will flash or swap ecu yet and are going on weeks of waiting, others have had ecu swaps that worked, and a few have had issues come back after hard part and ecu swap. It's going to be handled case by case in its current status. As far as blowing it out of proportion, not at all. Do we come here to vent and commiserate? Sure. There are some trying to figure it out on their own,but we have been lucky so far, no one has died b/c of cel/idle issue yet. So I don't think anyone has blown anything out of proportion. Only when you post "add me to the list" will you really understand the severity.

I never checked in, but I got mine back today.
I took it in September 17, it was there for 19 days. Went in with 4495 on the ODO and came out with 4502.

That seems like a lot of miles for them to put on it!

Edit: I just realized that it came out with less miles on it than when it went in! That is very suspicious!
