Thanks.
I'm a machinist, and metallurgy is a small supplemental part of that trade. In school I've forged, machined, hardened and tempered parts.

well an sti version sounds nice but keeping with the N/A motif, I'd say advance the supension, engine output, add lighter wheels, stickier tires, and there ya go

I have to reiterate.. the Subaru market is different than Scions. When they have an STI model it's serious business. TRD for Scions have become IMO.. rice with minimal gains.. just another warrantied way to milk the cattle sort of speak.

They could go with a mild power bump but more weight-savings/handling mods. It's going to be hard to make decent predictions, though, since this situation will be very different than the Impreza/WRX/STI situation.

anyaway back to the FT-86 subaru variant. I did say increase the engine output, and I'm pretty sure they can get 50+ horsepower out of the new boxer. and while i would agree with you about the h6, you have to put yourself in the companies position they're investing all this time and money into this car and are desperately trying to keep it small, lightweight, balanced, affordable, etc. now adding a turbo could easily shoot the price up $3000, and with this car dancing on the $20,000-$25,000 line, adding a turbo would make the car just as expensive at the impreza sti which means they could quite possibly sell less than they want and over a long term period loose money. second point as to why not add the h6 (even though I like this idea)? adding a different engine to car changes everything about the car, it could make the care heavier, and on top of that breach the "affordable" goal of these cars keep in mind this car has to be ready by November so it can fully unveiled at the TMS and Sema in December so I say this while the subaur version of the FT86 wany very well be an FT86 with a six-star badge, maybe over time as parts and labor become cheaper may we get the h6 version or the turbo version hopefully |

Not to mention that Subaru is separating the WRX from the Impreza lineup, which immediately allows Subaru to build a WRX specific platform. If it stays 4-door only, I'd be HIGHLY surprised. No doubt the new separate WRX will come with a 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan option. And the only reason I'd suspect they'd even build a 4-door option is because of 'heritage'. What I expect is that the 216a and WRX will act similarly as the Celica and the Supra did. Little brother, big brother. The 216a will never be as 'fast' as the WRX in factory form and its price will reflect this. This also means Force Induction is highly unlikely. Why? Because its also been said when the EJ is finally retired from the WRX/STI line of cars, the WRX will use a 2.0L. Probably the same 2.0L the 216a will use, only beefed up with FI. |

I'm thinking that the differences between the 216a and its STI version will be similar to the differences between the Integra GS-R and Type-R. On paper, not a lot of huge differences, but the application makes for a harder edged car. Especially on the track.

Body Aero, sportier exhaust, upgraded interior trim, stiffer suspension, misc. underhood upgrades. There will be a power difference between a standard 216a and the STi version, but it'll probably be very minor. To put it in perspective, if we use a very conservative weight figure for the 216a at 2800lbs, even with just 250hp the car has a better p/w ratio than the WRX STi. Along with its lower CoG, and overall better balance, the 216a would end up being the better sports car of the two models. I honestly can't see Subaru upstaging its flagship sports car with a "red-headed stepchild" in the group: the RWD newcomer. Last edited by OldSkoolToys; 06-18-2011 at 09:27 PM. |
