Maybe you were thinking of the high revving V6 from the old Taurus SHO? I know that one was built with Yamaha's help

If the FT-86 is really light, then NA is the best way to go, of course it has to be high revving, this means "short" stroke. Turbo is nice for straight line performance but this is not the purpose of the FT-86. Me being a BMW fan and loving BMW engines, especially BMW M and BMW Motorsport engines, today my favorite engine is the 4.8l V10 of the LF-A developped with Yamaha. If the flat4 f the FT-86 is also developped with Yamaha then this engine will be a true winner. Imagine 250 PS and redline at 9.000 RPM!!!!

This car is not going to "wail" like the LFA and it's not going to have the internals to cope with much higher revs than that, because it's being built to a price. The LFA very obviously was not built to a price....it's way more expensive than it's most logical rival from Ferrari....and it's slower. I honestly think they just released it to re-coup SOME development costs after failing to hit their target performance and weight numbers. Apart from the best sounding engine I've heard in my life...I don't really think it has much going for it. |

I do not agree the LF-A is slow, in fact it is faster than the SLS AMG or R8 V10. IT is just overpriced for its performance, but it is worth the engine only. And concerning the FT-86, this car should bring something good. 10 years ago Honda had the S2000 that produced 250 PS from a NA 2.0l I4, it had redline at 9.000 RPM.

IMO Toyota over-reached with the LF-A with the budget and time-frame they adhered to. The FT-86, OTOH, has been gestated very slowly. This means their budget is either similarly minimal and they're milking every yen to make it as good as they can, or they ponied up some coin and it's going to be an incredibly well-sorted vehicle straight out of the box. I don't expect to see any phillips-head sheet-metal screws on the exterior of the FT-86 whatsoever.

NA or boost..
ok.. so I didnt read all the posts, and im new to this forum, but believe me im not new to tuning or forums. I have collected a wide knowlegde of mechanicals since being a supra owner. I for one will tell you that Turbos are great for the edge on power increase, but on the other hand, a light weight nimble car gets its edge from being exactly what it is, Lightweight. Once you purchase the car you may do what you like with it, whatever discipline you choose or makes you happiest. If I buy the FR-S its staying NA, the reason for this is that my supra is turbo and because it is, its tempermental towards tuning. Increasing boost begins to complicate tuning and also becomes more expensive, I just dont have the time or money for such a project car anymore. I am very excited for the FR-S, and hopefully its not a let down. I really want a release date on the car, as right now im in Korea and I have been watching the vids and looking over pics that have been supplied by this site. Still not sure why Toyota is selling under Scion, but since it is, it will be cheaper, as I know its Toyotas nature to price its sports cars higher under its badge. Right now Toyota really needs this car, I have not been interested in Toyota for the longest time, my everday driver is a 2010 Mazda 3 2.5 hatch, and I love it! Its perfect to me, nice tranny, the shifting is ever so smooth, the torque is almost there in every gear, gets up and goes nicely, lives up to the zoom zoom reputation. Since toyota killed the Supra, Celica and MR sports cars, they havent had anything too fun except for the TC. But the TC just wasnt going to cut it for me. A true sports car is FR, not FF. I still have my supra and my wife has had her S2000 for 7 months now. Both her and I are into the tuning scene, we both agree that it would be better for me to put money into a newer platform that wouldnt break, or be costly everytime I turn around. So here is to hoping the FR-S lives up to the hype and is successful!

Personally its great to see a NA machine going as thats one of the main reasons for me looking at getting it. After driving turbos and the many issues (big and small
) that they come with having an NA would be a nice change.

I'm glad it'll be NA. I don't think turbo will be an option, judging by engine placement and structural framing.
I think supercharging will be a later option. That would work perfectly will the space available and wouldn't require squeezing in plumbing. |

See, even other turbo owners know the headaches that come with their cars, and agree. Lets keep it simple and clean FTW.
