That would prove your point much better.
I actually had this type of experience. When I had the 1st gen Prius 10 years ago, the trip computer used to say that the average MPG is 99.9. I took it to the dealer and showed the service guy the display showing average of 99.9 MPG. And he said, "And..., what's wrong with that?".

So I'm at the service place getting my oil changed. The lady said this is the first frs oil change for them.

When does the actual 'E' come on? I always thought it was about one gallon, but I think that's off.
when the light comes on I did some wizardry to figure out that it's about 3 gallons left over, so about 40-50 miles til empty. Though I wish we had a 'miles to empty' range display on the dash.

my avg MPG from the computer tends to be about 1 mpg higher than the actual.

SERIOUSLY.
I had the same issue with the dealership I bought it from! they had it listed as a BRZ at a toyota dealership and the lady behind the counter had to go look at my car before she realized they sell them. Sounds like toyota dropped the ball on training this time!

just do this:

Average mpg x 13.2(size of full tank)
then subract that by the amount of miles driven since last fill up (trip A or B)
=amount of miles left till empty

Example:
If im getting 25mpg average, and ive driven 250 miles since i filled my tank then thats: 25x13.2=330-250= 80 miles left!
(of course there are many factors that can throw this slightly off like driving much harder ur last few gallons, or an inaccurate avg. mpg reading, but still gives you a general idea)

I've been getting about 28mpg city/highway, and ~29.5 on the "average". Thats about 50/50.

My trip counter is off a bit, but not by much. I have been averaging about 31-32 my trip has been consistently 1-1.5 MPG higher then my calculations by hand.
