So, every once in a while I start to think about buying a VW. I love their interiors, for a DD the drive is fantastic and they even get decent mileage. But then I remember how much of a pain in the ass they are. A friend called a few minutes ago asking for help diagnosing a problem with his 08 GLI. The immobilizer is kicking in and wont let it run for more then a second... THE IMMOBILIZER!!! Cars are supposed to be designed to NEVER leave you stranded for something like this. That's why they have limp home maps and are required to not NEED the power brakes or steering for those systems to operate. I have never come across a problem with the immobilizer system, unless it was caused by an aftermarket alarm, but the car is all original. FML
Anyway, I'm off to VW forums to do some reading. |

edit: okay after some research I've found that chumpcar allows 6 point bolt in cages; so it's completely possible to daily the E36 and compete in chumpcar. Autopower already makes a bolt in 6 point cage that complies with the rules... so basically seat+harness+cage is all I need to compete. Suhweet. edit 2: oh and a fire suppression system...

kidding, kidding. Actually, I love the message. I never heard of chumpcar before, sounds alot like the 24 hours of lemons, or the 20xx challange. AWESOME. I've always wanted to enter one of those but time, money and family have always prevented it. If you do enter, I'll be watching your posts for progress updates. :happy0180: |

Actually, I would suggest you *not* to buy a VW. The interior seems good and Audi-like quality, the exterior seems pretty and not rusty (12 years corrosion warranty, baby.). However, given that it is a German brand the parts comes with German's price (aka, $$$$$). The regular service package is also more like German's price compared with other brands.

I have unleaded solder which has a high melting point and forms the stupid brittle crystals really easily, so I've blown a lot of components trying to solder them. Oh, it didn't help that my irons were always 2 dollar pieces of shit that self destructed within 1.5 hours. |

Thanks, I'll give that a shot aswell. And yeah I don't think I'll be trying to afford to keep a VW, as a lease or short term I think it would be good. But trying to keep one for a long time would just be too expensive. Quote:
Only tried soldering a TCO once. I used a pair of vice grips as a heat sink and used the water in the sponge to cool TCO after each heating. Yup, been there. I picked up a $60 soldering station on ebay a while ago when my laptop died. The power board needed the joints reflowed and I figured the two week wait and a few minutes of work to tear down the laptop, heat the joints and then put it back together would be worth it to not have to go shopping for another laptop. The soldering station is still going strong and has great temperature control and I'm using the laptop to type this. WINI've only tried unleaded solder a couple times at work. That stuff pisses me off. Get yourself some eutectic solder and I bet you'll have a lot less trouble. Quote:
