Yeah I know!

The interesting thing about the vid is what's happening to the cam timing curves. They get all weird when you that issue. Based on the tech memo I think they're they're analyzing the same kind of data.

ECU = engine control unit. Computer that controls many engine functions.

I admit, very car dumb when it comes to naming parts of the engine or figuring out the acronyms for them... DUH to me.

This is proably what my dealer ends up doing to. I told them several times there is an ECU issue and change or update that first. Nono they are going to replace cam part first. Then when they realize that i was right from the start, they'll order the ECU and i'll probably have to wait even longer!!!!

I asked my service tech to reconfirm the ECU replacement with Toyota technical services and they are still replacing only the cam gears at this time. I think based on the data captures they're taking maybe we're all involved in a larger effort to determin root cause.

Hey ftc~brz.... Nice job on the email to the service guy. I hope that they take it in to consideration. And for why it's worth, I think you are correct. Good luck!!

I don't make any assumption about what anyone knows based on anything, and I was trying to add a little levity. I apologize, I meant no offense...

lol...no no not you! The service advisors...

It's pretty hard to offend me in reality or on line. But when you go in describing a problem with terms and parts and not sounding like a Mineke comercial and give a girl the brush off...it's aggravating

I had a service writer once tell me that it was actually pretty good for all 4 of my rotors to be warped at 56k miles. (only my rear were warped and I had replaced the rear pads @ 36k so it chewed through those and my rotors??) Oh, and it was a front wheel drive car?!?
I'm a girl not a complete idiot! That's why when I find a good shop that won't jerk me around I give them every referral I can.

So I just talked with my dealer, car has been in the shop over a week now.
Toyota and Subaru guys are there right now and that the official fix that Toyota is doing is reprogramming the computer. They did it this morning and have been test driving it with no problems. I might be getting it back tomorrow and I will keep you all posted on it.
Boy do I hope this works !!!! I hate my Impala rental. LOL

Just got a call from Scion Headquarters. He told me my parts will be in on 9/27. I asked him which parts, he started naming off the mechanical parts and I asked what about the new ECU. He said until they determine that the hard parts won't fix the problem they won't order the ECU. I said wouldn't it be prudent to order it now since it seems most if not all of the cars seem to require the ecu. He said that is not what Scion has found. So I'm pretty sure that once they install the parts I will have more to wait so they can most likely get an ECU for me as well.

Sheesh!!!!

Dealer gave me an update and said the parts (cam gear sensor) were being installed today and I should have it back tomorrow afternoon. That of course assumes that it actually fixes the problem. I have a feeling I'll be on the ecu waiting list soon.

Yeah probably. I just hate the randomness that seems to surround the dealers on which shop does what. There gotta be som fuggin TSB they can use?!

I found a similarly deficient level of basic problem solving skills within Subaru. Nothing is done proactively. It's all wait-and-pray, then react. Really aggravating. Be sure to rub this in your Scion rep's face when it turns out that you do in fact need an ECU.

It's really god damned frustrating that Subaru and Scion seem to have a corporate policy of insisting the internet doesn't exist and owners don't talk to each other.
