First car was an auto 300zx with all seasons, drove that through two Jersey winters, and it was doable. I've had some Hairy moments in my sentra before I put all seasons on the car. Remember one time I was drving to an examine at Rutgers during a February snow storm with my wife, guy in front of me slammed on the brakes, I dabbed mine, the rear unloaded and began to rotate, at which point I had do my best to slide it in between all the light poles, not fun.

Something that is important is that most people with awd cars will usually run all season tires. This is often ok for traction purposes, however inadequate for braking purposes as awd doesn't aid in braking in the snow. This is another reason why snow tires are importat as they really help you stop in snowy weather.

I had an 03 cobra with 315 drag radials out back. I drove in the snow fine. There were only few occasions where the car wouldnt move at all. Put it in gear and the tires just spun.

Basically just get a set of different wheels/tires for the winter. Throw some chains on and you are set.

I personnally drive an AE86 in Middle Quebec snow, there is snow almost everyday, from ½" to 12", I've been driving it for 3 years now and at night when I'm not working, I get as excited as a Kid, I get in my car and I go for a 2-3 hours run sideway.

the car is lowered with eibach prokit, has a welded differential and some Gislaved Nordfrost5 spiked tires

so what I mean, if you can PILOT a car, you will only have more fun and you will enjoy an LSD FT-86

and if you can't, buy a bus pass...

Driving a car on snow can be FUN and scary at the same time. And yes, some people need to buy a bus pass and stop complaining about driving RWD on snow.

Are spiked tires legal in the US? I've never seen/used them before...

Me either. I always use summer tires driving on snow, and it's scary. LOL I will get a set of wheelies with winter tires when I got FT-86/FR-S.
I think you should try to use the spike tires. If you got pulled over, those tires are not legal. LOL

Spiked tires would have traction like a boss in the winter, but they're probably illegal since they damage the asphalt more than regular tires.

*spiked* tire does not mean they have metal spikes on it. Check this out.

They should be legal in North America.

I for one hope the car is decent in snow, as it'll be my daily. I'll put on a set of quality winter tires, so that's a given for me. As long as the chassis has decent balance, over-the-limit correct-ability, and mechanical grip it'll be good. The long-ish wheelbase will certainly help snow stability.

Its funny that nobody mentioned snow chains or snow cables. I have an intern here at work from Toronto and he never heard of them either?

Its manditory here in CA in the mtn areas when it snows. Only 4WD vehicles w/snow tires can get away with not using chains.

I saw a good set of snow tires and light foot you'll be fine.

^^Are you sure you're not thinking of semi-trucks w/mandatory chains up the mountains?

FWIW, chains are illegal in Michigan. We already have an incompetent road commission and don't need any help from chains tearing up the roads more!

No, all type of vehicles depending on the conditions. CA already has shitty drivers when it rains so Caltrans figures drivers will have a more diffiucult time in the snow.

I live in Michigan and know about the snow thing. Currently I drive a RWD E46 BMW, before that a Subaru Impreza. The BMW does much better in the snow. Why? Electronic nannies. The stability, traction control, and ABS are very very good in the Bimmer. Makes it virtually fool proof to drive.

What makes the biggest difference however is using snow tires. I know it's a pain to switch tires twice a year but trust me: it is absolutely worth it. All FWD and 4WD help you with is not getting stuck. Once you're underway all cars steer with two wheels and break with all four.
